So Donn Roach pitched for Iowa last night. I had assumed he would get the start in Game 2 of the doubleheader. Do we just piggyback Wood and Jackson now? Or give a spot start to Dallas Beeler? Or do we buy some retread, a la Clayton Richard, to give us one start? The starting options are pretty thin on the 40-man roster.

So... thinking outside of the box: What about Carl Edwards, Jr.? Theo's not been hesitant in using his minor league pieces this year; we clearly aren't saving any bullets. It would be nice to get a preliminary look at him against major league hitters, and he is already on the 40-man. He's had some control issues arise this year, but surely he would be less hittable than Dallas Beeler, right? Maybe we throw him out there and try to get 2 or 3 innings from him and then turn to Wood and Jackson. Or is it a better idea to just piggyback Wood and Jackson and throw Medina or -- gasp -- Schlitter into the pen, with the extra roster spot? And would we even want to start Edwards' clock with his control issues as they are currently?

Planning a bullpen start for one game of a doubleheader(near the end of 10 games in 9 days) seems like a recipe for a bad time.

That said, I don't have any great suggestions otherwise. I guess you tell Ramirez to take an early all star break and have Beeler try to get you through 5? Or alternatively, demote Baxter instead of Ramirez then bring back Szczur or Lake for the White Sox series in Beeler's place?

Jackson hasn't pitched since the 27th though, and Wood has only thrown 21 pitches since then. If you can get through today without having to use either, then you should probably be able to rely on Wood+Jackson to get you 5 or so innings, and if the pen needs help they can swap Schlitter for Baxter at some point I guess.

In any case, this would be a really good time for Lester and Arrieta to combine for 16 innings or so in their starts.

Agreed on it not being a good time for a bullpen start, but we don't really have a normal bullpen anyway, with Wood and Jackson both there. Ramirez being just back from injury doesn't help. But the rest of the guys are healthy and pretty sturdy. And having two long guys helps relieve us of some taxing innings. As much as Wood and Jackson have disappointed as starters, they've helped get us through some rough spots, with starters making quick exits and the like. They've been nice assets in that sense. So, even though we don't have a prototypical bullpen, it might help us in this situation.

I'd go with Edwards for 2-3 innings (hasn't pitched since 7/1, so maybe he can go 3?) + Richard for 2 innings (replaces his side session). Then bullpen or Wood/Jackson

We have 80 guys in our pen And everyone's getting a 4 day rest in a week.

I had it in my head that Richard had to pitch Wednesday for some reason. That does make him an option to go a couple innings or be the one sent down(if possible) since he's not needed til after the break.

FWIW, Beeler's turn in the rotation was supposed to be yesterday and he didn't take it, so they're at least considering him as an option.

The break doesn't matter much to me, but you might be right, I haven't been able to follow very closely for a week. From a quick glance it seems like they should be able to fill in the blanks with a Jackson/Wood piggyback without much risk as long as neither Arrieta or Lester get bombed.

Ahh... makes sense. They probably just didn't want to run Roach out there against the same team he just faced. He didn't really get pounded that badly, and he did get a lot of groundballs, but letting them see Roach again probably isn't the best idea. Hopefully Beeler can follow the same script and get some better results. 5 innings would be nice. It seems their starter is unannounced, as well.

Edwin Jackson has been extremely good in his limited role this year. Give the guy a shot - he has better stuff than anyone else we can throw out there.
