This forum is full of a bunch of people who have their finger on the trigger ready to jump at the first chance to show you how smart they are. People here literally browse through the threads LOOKING for opportunities to throw zingers and assert their superior intelligence.

The other day I made a thread asking one simple question: What race is Addison Russell? It was an honest question. I was curious. I meant no harm by it. I got absolutely bombarded with comments like, "WHY DOES IT MATTER?!?" as if I'm being some sort of ignorant racist for just ASKING about a person's ethnicity.

There is a lot that I love about this forum, but the people can be a bit much at times. It's kind of like living in the suburbs. All your neighbors are going to be a bunch of stuck-up pricks.

that wasn't the question you asked.

Putting aside every other reason for that thread having been a bad idea....you know google exists right?

but i think mostly people are annoyed by some of your habits b/c they remind them of the places they left to come to nsbb.

Bingo.

Think of it this way. If you were at a party, and there was a group of people you were listening to talk about the Cubs and talking about sabermetric stats that you're not knowledgeable about, in depth knowledge of the entirety of the Cubs from the business aspects all the way to the lowest minor league systems that you aren't familiar with, and all using a brand of humor they all were in on but you couldn't quite grasp, would you walk up to that group of people and be comfortable jumping in on the conversation with something meatbally like "Man have you seen Lester's W-L record? What a joke! We need a pitcher who knows how to win, right guys?" would you expect them to be like "Dude, good point, never thought of it that way. Welcome to the club! You seem like a fun person to have around!"?

You make music. I'm sure you use a cadre of different musical programs to make your music. Maybe you even have some musical instrument ability. If you were having an in depth discussion with your musician friends about something you're truly passionate about and I walked up and was like "So, I was messing around with Garage Band at the Apple Store, it's really neat! I think I can make something like Skrillex! Do you guys like Skrillex?!?! Also been playing a lot of Guitar Hero, I'm getting really good! Watch your back, Joe Perry!" would you think I'm a cool dude or would you immediately wish I'd go back over by the punch bowl and drown in it?

I play 11 instruments but that doesnt matter, i wouldnt tell some guy who wants to make music to go [expletive] off because he wasnt as good or educated as me,. thats just plain ole being a dick

that wasn't the question you asked.

Are you kidding me right now? Given the substance of this thread, you are really still going to nitpick over the fact that I accidentally used the word "nationality" instead of "ethnicity"?

This is the type of [expletive] I'm talking about.

Putting aside every other reason for that thread having been a bad idea....you know google exists right?

Like I said in the thread, I did use google before posting. If you can show me someplace on the internet where it says what ethnicity he is, that would be great, because I still have not figured it out.

So, to answer your question: Yes, I know google exists.

At the bottom of his Wikipedia page it states both "African-American baseball players" and "American people of Japanese descent" among the categories. If you want more detailed percentages, I guess you'll need his family tree.

.

You act as though you have made some profound statements. You completely misrepresented what happened in that thread. dont get pissed off at other people because you don't know what nationality means.

i don't share brandon's feeling that the thread was necessarily going to be terrible. but when you say "nationality" and mean "ethnicity" then you've asked a very different question. getting angry at people b/c you asked a question poorly doesn't really make sense. and there was only 1 person who said "who cares" when you corrected yourself and asked about his ethnicity.

it's sort of a dumb thing to start a discussion about rather than just try to find on google. but it's also not that big of a deal, imo. but if you're going to start a discussion that some people might find somewhat sensitive, you should probably be careful not to start it with the wrong question. and then, if you do ask the wrong question, don't get defensive about the reaction to what was a pretty stupid question with an easy to find answer ("what is a baseball player's nationality").

regardless, i don't see what any of that has to do with this thread. you received 1 response you didn't like ("who cares") and then the thread was locked. if you're unhappy with that, pm brandon or tim.

Who cares? You nailed him on semantics, so? Was his question truly offensive?

I don't think you know what semantics means.

There is a very large difference between nationality and ethnicity. That is the point. Most people in that thread pointed out that difference and this guy took offense from being corrected. It's not a minor distinction.

na·tion·al·i·ty

ˌnaSHəˈnalədē/

noun

noun: nationality; plural noun: nationalities

1.

the status of belonging to a particular nation.

"they changed their nationality and became Lebanese"

synonyms: citizenship

"what is your nationality?"

distinctive national or ethnic character.

"the change of a name does not discard nationality"

2.

an ethnic group forming a part of one or more political nations.

"all the main nationalities of Ethiopia"

synonyms: ethnic group, ethnic minority, tribe, clan, race, nation

"all the main nationalities of Ethiopia"

https://www.google.com/#q=nationality

The way that it is written, it sounds as if "nationality" can be used synonymously in place of "ethnicity"

1. I have

2. No I didn't

3. I'm not upset

4. I know what nationality means.

Good post, though.

I wasn't even aware that there was anything below the references section on Wikipedia. I never scroll down that far. Thank you for that. I learned something.

And yeah, if you could pull up his family tree, that would be great.

When did I ask where Addison Russell was born?

I'm not angry at anyone. Yes, only one person specifically said, "who cares?" but there were a number of other posts that were less than constructive. If you see a thread or a post that you feel is stupid... why even waste your valuable smart people time replying? Just move on to the next thread and talk about crazy statistics or something.

Also... why does everyone keep saying that I didn't use google before posting? That's a lie.

There is a very large difference between nationality and ethnicity. That is the point. Most people in that thread pointed out that difference and this guy took offense from being corrected. It's not a minor distinction.

I did not take offense to being corrected. I just find it ridiculous that people would make such a big deal out of using the word nationality vs ethnicity. It was like I said the n-word or something.

When you asked what nationality he was. His nationality is American.

We have already established that I was curious about his genetic background, not his birthplace. Not sure why you are still pressing this issue. I am well aware that Russell is American and have been since last year.

Uh, you kinda did that when you used it as an example in this thread so you call everyone pricks.

What are you talking about?

Nobody was talking about it when suddenly...

anyways it dont [expletive] matter what ethnicity he is, he is a good ball player and will be wearing cubbie blue for a while

I like how you scream at everyone like the answer is obvious and then proceed to go, "uhmmmm, well these guys look this way, but these guys look that way...so I dunno."

Some people are just curious about a person's background. Multicultural families are cool as hell.

Just when I thought I knew what race he was... this picture has me more confused than ever.

Also... I just realized that DJ Lamahieu is an all-star. Holy crap.
