Out of all the pitcher's names out there, I think one guy stands out more than the others. Clay Buchholz is in the midst of a fantastic season (3.48 ERA, 2.67 FIP, 8.55 K/9 as of tonight). The current management drafted him out of high school and was there for his development.

This year he's making $12 million and has 2 years, $26.5 million left on his contract with 2 team options with small buyouts. Realistically, if the price isn't bad, I think this is the guy we should be going after.

Agreed; I'm a Bucholz fan. Someone like Hamels is going to cost too much. Get Bucholz and a bat.

I like Buchholz a ton. When he's healthy, he's a top 10 caliber SP in all of baseball and one of my favorites to watch. I don't know that Buchholz will be much cheaper than Hamels in terms of asking price in a trade. He should be cheaper based on his injury history, but his contract isn't prohibitive for the Red Sox, who do have a lot of young talent already. Seems like they could really use some young pitching, which doesn't match up that well with the Cubs.

I think Buchholz is a great target. Unless the Red Sox have some personal issue with him though, I can't think why in the world they'd trade him, specifically to the Cubs who can't really make it a quality v. quantity deal for arms.

There has been some talk about him on the board lately so I just figured there were at least rumors that they would be shopping him. If not, yeah, it's likely just a pipe dream.

Clay Buchholz was forced to leave Friday's start against the Yankees due to tightness in his pitching elbow.

That certainly doesn't sound encouraging. Buchholz saw a noticeable dip in velocity in the fourth inning before departing after a consultation with the team trainer. He'll presumably head for an MRI exam to determine exactly what's going on, but a trip to the disabled list is likely in order.
