Not that it matters, but that being an unearned run is kind of strange.

 

That is weird. Shouldn't it be scorer's discretion, and shouldn't the scorer think that the runner is scoring from first with two outs every time?

 

Span probably would not have been playing as far in as he was if the runner was at first and would have had a better chance to make the catch.

Yeah, they even mentioned it on the broadcast. If Desmond doesn't make the throwing error the runner doesn't advance to second. If the runner doesn't advance to second, the defense would be playing Russell for no doubles, and that hit would've been caught or at least cut off quickly enough to prevent the runner from scoring from first.

 

The Desmond error kinda cost them the game, so...
