Quick question, figured someone around here would know.

Do you have to be selected for the All Star game to participate in the home run derby?

 

I know in the NBA you dont have to be an all star to participate in the dunk contest.

Generally yes, although Cespedes was not one when he won the Derby, IIRC. I think they may have relaxed the 'you have to be an All-Star' thing when they started having team captains and AL vs. NL.

Yeah, as I understand it, the captains select who is in the derby and who isn't.

 

I was pretty upset that Tulowitzki didn't select Rizzo last year after he even made it known he would've loved to have been in it. Instead we had to watch the likes of Todd Frazier and over the hill Justin Morneau. And Puig, who people seem to think is a big time power hitter.

There have been a few that haven't been All Stars. Most notably Hee Seop Choi, but that was the year they did one representative for each country and they needed a representative from South Korea.
