So, what happens if the Hawks don't get under the cap by opening day?

IIRC, commissioner's discretion from a list that includes losing future draft picks at a minimum and includes forfeiting games.

They'll be under.

Had a hockey guy at work tell me that nothing would happen this year, but they'd take a cap penalty next year. That seemed pretty ripe for abuse.

Unless I *really* missed some changes recently, your hockey guy is wrong.

I think he's referring to the bonus cushion. You have to account for potential bonuses even if they are unlikely to be met, but you can go over by a percentage because of them (and only because of them). Then if they actually do get paid out, the excess counts against your cap hit the next year. We've got a $60k cap hit this year due to that.

But you can't be over for any other reasons, and we don't have much in terms of bonuses this year. That's not why we're over. We *have* to get under for real.

Kris Versteeg is back on the ice during #Blackhawks practice.

Versteeg still on the bench here. Q asks if he's OK and back on the ice he goes. #Blackhawks

Based on reviews I read this morning, Steeg was all over the ice against Montreal last night and looked good. Rozsival on the other hand was awful and folks are calling for him to be packaged with whomever (prob Leddy) as part of the pending get-under-the-cap trade.

That seems unlikely to me. I can't see Q going with an entirely new 3rd pairing, using some combo of Cumiskey, Rundblad, and VanR. Plus, Rozi is damn near impossible to trade with that cap number, his age, and his suckiness of late and during the playoffs last season. I think we will be waiving good bye to Leddy or Oduya (likely the former) by Sunday.

I'd personally rather move Oduya, but I get why you don't when Leddy is due is large qualifier next season (IIRC, $3.5 million) and they don't yet see him as 2nd pairing guy. I wish Q trusted Leddy enough to give him a shot with Hammer. That is a potentially lethal combo.

For a bad team looking to win the draft lottery, or at least come in 2nd for the draft lottery, Rozsival would be a nice pickup. Such teams are probably operating near the cap floor anyway so the money isn't an issue. In Rozy they'd get a vet whocould teach the younger guys professionalism without doing something unexpected like helping them win too many games.

Versteeg looked like 2010 Versteeg yesterday. As for Rosival, if there is a team out there who is below the cap floor they might take him. Maybe this is why Stan is waiting until the last minute.

More smoke re. Leddy:

@TSNBobMcKenzie: If I were a betting man, I'd wager on Teuvo Teravainen starting in AHL and rookie D Trevor van Riemsdyk being in CHI opening night lineup.

Source tells the @suntimes that the #Blackhawks have traded Nick Leddy to the #Isles. Full story: http://bit.ly/10yRZGX

Nick Leddy has been traded to the Islanders for Ville Pokka, T.J. Brennan and Anders Nilsson. The @NHLBlackhawks needed cap space.

@DavidHaugh: T.J. Brennan, 25-year-old Hawks got in deal, was AHL defenseman of the year in 2014 for Toronto Marlies.

Not sure if that's meaningful at all

Don't know anything about him but he's had more than cups of coffee in the league a few times. Seems like more than a bag of pucks, which is what I figured we would get in a salary dump.

We just traded Leddy and Regin (released) for Carcillo. WTF. Carcillo sucks.

Leddy was necessary to get under the cap. I'm sure if they could have found a taker for Roszival they would have gone that route but no one, us included, wants him right now. I was hoping for more back from a Leddy trade but Pokka isn't a bad return under the circumstances.

Signing Carcillo is puzzling but then the Hawks make one obviously stupid move every off season (like giving Khabibulin $2 million last year) If it's a choice between Mashinter or Carcillo sitting in the press box, who cares? IF it's a choice of Mashinter or Carcillo taking PT away from Morin, Carcillo is less bad at hockey though Mashinter is better at face punching. The Ryan Reeveses of the world aren't going to fight themselves so they have to carry somebody for that role whether we like it or not.

This is Cubs.com board [expletive]. Seriously. We all understand why the Leddy move had to be made. And is anyone really broken up about Regin moving on? As for Carcillo, that's been addressed.
