this is the thread for people like me who never watch soccer but watch the world cup. people can obviously post in both threads but if you are a soccer nerd, this whole thread (or at least my posts) will look like nothing but the hottest of hot sports takes.

this is sort of the equivalent of the non-book reader thread for game of thrones. if this works like it should, it will be more enjoyable for us morons and the smart people can gawk and laugh here.

I only know what

.

Oh, this is where I once again mention I was in Johannesburg and watched the WC final across the street from Nelson Mandela's and Bishop Tutu's houses four years ago. I can't even remember who played, but just about everything else about that day is indelibly etched in my brain.

my dad was a high school soccer coach for 20 years and I know next to nothing about the sport.

i know the offsides rule! i'm pretty sure i posted something on facebook during the last world cup about why/how it should be changed, though, as the twenty total hours of soccer i've watched in my life qualify me to figure out how to improve it.

I remember that one guy who liked to yell "GOAL." I hope he's not dead.

I think he's doing commentary on Univision, but I'm not sure.

ETA: He has his own radio network where he will be calling the games. His name is Andres Cantor.

What kind of shot do we have of getting out of the first round this time?

Silver has us at about 39% or so; I think that the chances are much higher than that. I'd be more surprised if we didn't.

If we beat Ghana and Portugal-Germany ends in a draw, I really like our chances.

What is the offsides rule?

I think we should demonstrate such answers in ms paint format and perhaps great plays we saw and enjoyed

Short answer...you can't get behind the defense without the ball.

The red guy on the right is offside if the ball is passed to him, because there's no blue defender between him and the goal. (Keeper doesn't count.)

This thread is the place for me. I know the rules, watch some EPL games, er, matches, occasionally. But definitely not crazy into it.

America, [expletive] yeah.

once the ball is struck, you can run past the last defender.

the problem I've always had with soccer is the card system. i mean, i'll see a tackle that looks clean and innocuous enough, a guy flops and a card comes out. the replays shows a seemingly fine tackle in which maybe, possibly, the guy with the ball gets clipped a bit by the foot of the sliding player, and the announcers act like the guy just started throwing punches, like it was the dirtiest play in the world and the ref is standing there writing [expletive] in his book.

just looked like a normal play to me.

I feel like if we beat Ghana, 70%, if we draw Ghana, 25%, if we lose to Ghana, 3%

I don't. If they draw, that's one point Portugal gets that we probably won't get. That means we'll probably have to beat Portugal to advance. I'd rather have Germany beat them 5-0.

Actually the keeper does count because the rule is there have to be two players between the ball and the goal. It's just usually the goalie is in the goal so he almost always counts as one defender.
