The guy was throwing strikes; it's not like you just take pitches to take pitches if the guy is putting them in the zone. Plus it's the top of the first, so it's not like they had to give Feldman a break or anything.

Yes you do, sometimes. You don't just swing at any first pitch strike. That's not a good approach.

What? Of course you can swing at a first pitch strike if you think you have something to hit.

Yeah, I didn't say you can't.

The problem is some (lots - historically) of our players think they have something to hit way too often.

CUBS are 11-13 (.458) when they don't allow any first inning runs.... 3-9 (.250) when they do

CUBS are 11-8 (.579) when they score first in the game.... 3-14 (.176) when they don't

Which creates this self-fulling prophecy-mentality that seems to assume that swinging early = automatically bad and taking pitches = automatically good. If the first pitch is there and you think you can hit it, great, take a shot. Taking it just to take it isn't always the right choice.

My dad has become pitch count-obsessed lately and he's even bothered if the Cubs have a GOOD inning and they don't make the opposing pitcher throw more than 20 pitches (and at least 15). It's pretty amusing.

Alright, my dad is actually at this game as part of his birthday celebration; he's probably going insane.

That said, nearly every pitch they've taken has been a strike. [expletive] this guy.
