I don't want to sound as a 'hater', but I think expectations were inflated a bit for the Hawks this postseason based on their regular season. Yes they put up historic numbers, but if you look at it, it was basically the same 'core' of players since the Cup winning team that in previous seasons had disappointing early postseason exits. This year I think was a case of Q, calling on his previous experience, working his magic with the compacted schedule. Where they a very good team, yes? Head and shoulders above the top 3-4 teams this year? I'm not so sure. I would not be surprised if the Kings take this next series.

no, the reason they were significantly better than the last 2 years was the emergence of guys like leddy/saad/shaw/kruger being able to adequetely replace the depth lost in versteeg/ladd/campbell/byfuglian etc

Campbell wasn't just depth though. He was arguably better than any defenseman on this current roster.

well yeah, he was more than just depth. i just put him in there because he was one of the guys we lost and leddy has done the most decent job replacing him since h'es been gone.

like seanimal said, the cup team was a little better, but this is the first time since then that we've had the depth to go with the stars again.

that also brings to light something that annoyed me throughout the entire series. all we heard about was how zetterberg was completely shutting toews down, yet zetterberg only scored 1 goal. they both shut each other down. it was 2 great players neutralizing each other. i don't understand why zetterberg was getting 100% of the praise, even when the hawks were winning the last 3 games.

If he doesn't (or can't) cancel out Toews, they get swept or lose in 5. The way I see it, people expect Toews to shut down Zetterberg but its news when Zetterberg shuts down Toews.

If the same thing happens in the next series with kopitar, I think that favors the Hawks due to the Kings difficulty scoring.

but i don't understand why. you can just as easily say that the hawks lose in 5 if toews doesn't cancel out zetterberg.

I'm not a real good source for hockey stats, but I see Toews is a -2 for the playoffs so far, and 6 total points. Only Leddy and Seabrook have a lower +/- so far.

Toews does need to pick up his game a little, and I think he will. While you can say that each player neutralized each other, it's clear to me that Z had the better playoffs through 2 series, so maybe that's why Z is getting more credit. Also, Toews' meltdown was pretty obvious, so it drew a lot of attention.

+/- is to hockey stats what batting average is to baseball stats. Easy to calculate and somewhat useful but often misleading.

we're not talking about the whole playoffs, we're talking about the series. in the series they both had a goal and 3 assists, and they were both a minus (z -1, toews-3).

and what meltdown? the penalties in game 4? that sucked, but i don't see how he melted down in the series. i think he showed emotion, something we desperately needed in the first 4 games. i'd much rather see my star player get pissed off when things are going catastrophically, as opposed to the way kane and hossa acted the entire series.

I thought the way Q kind of put him on notice and then he seemed to not response very favorably in the game was a little disheartening.

Yeah, but he was seen on camera doing it several times, and yes I appreciated the emotion too but that's not how it was being perceived. It was being perceived as Toews losing composure. Pretty much the entire narrative of the halftime show of that game was about Toews needing to calm down, so if you are asking why Toews is not getting equal credit from people, it's a valid thing to point out.

I really wish the East Finals started tonight. Really in the mood for some hockey and there's no NBA game and the Cubs are on now.

I've been told to watch Goon. Will probably do that.

There was a replay of game 7 on CSN. I'm sure that's helpful now.

Z's line played better in the playoffs thus far.

I liked it. It wasn't quite Bull Durham on skates but it didn't take itself too seriously either.

like i said before, Sutter isn't going to outscheme anyone, he's not the dynamic hockey mind that Babcock is, nor is he a great motivator that can infuse his team with his own will at any intermission. the Kings are what they are, a big, fast team with a hot goalie. they're not going to change their game for us, they'll rely on what brought them this far. They kind of remind me of the 2010 Sharks with that huge HTMl top line, a very good defense corp, and an excellent, super aggressive goalie that likes to venture up out of the crease. The Hawks skated circles around them and sapped their goalie's will to live.

I like our chances against them, i think we're the much better team. they're just a bigger, slower, less-skilled version of the hawks with fewer threats and a better goalie.

Hope you are right and we're not going to see another series like Phoenix where the goalie stands on his head most of the series despite out playing the opponent.
