Well if this ain't the most depressing day of the minor league schedule, I dunno what is.

Day of the big league all-star break.

torreyes had his first strikeout today

I voted for both Zych and Morris in my top-50. Morris was my surprise pick, since his numbers last year were awesome. Zych has been awful this year, no K-ball at all.

Morris has also been a disappointment. Today, he came out to replace hatley in the 7th. Then he got replaced by Zych before anything happened, at least according to the Milb.com recap. I expect that means he's reinjured. Too bad for him.

I kinda suspect something is probably wrong with Zych as well, but we'll see. Maybe it's just mechanics in his case. Hatley has been wild, so he doesn't seem to be stepping up as needed.

Well, if you want more depressing, Garza's rehab start @ Tennessee has been scratched due to "dead arm"

Link?

they were saying on the score that it's not anticipated to be anything serious, i guess.

And havn't they been saying that since last July when we saw him being examined by the trainer in the dugout?

Why can't McNutt or Zych strike anyone out? Is it more the off-speed stuff or [expletive] command?

I assume it's secondary stuff for Zych.

AZ Phil says Frandy de la Rosa looks like a natural shortstop and comped him to Marco Hernandez. I remember the initial scouting reports said he would probably end up at 2B.

Yeah, that was great to read - so far, everything about de la Rosa sounds good (including the fact that he's going to play his age 17 season in the U.S.). Also, note Almora still is just shagging flyballs and working base running drills.

Technically, AZPhil did bring up that they could just be giving De La Rosa a taste of the US. Tad surprised at a Marco Hernandez comp, pretty sure he's supposed to have decent power, good enough for 2B.

And Albert Almora is really a trip. He is limited to some baserunning drills and shagging fly balls in BP, but he takes what he can do very seriously and almost pushes the pitchers away in the outfield to make a spectacular catch. Once he even ran up the side of the fence (a la Bo Jackson) to snare a long fly. You can see he is absolutely going crazy while waiting to get back into the lineup.

Haha, awesome.

I know there are plenty of chuckles when I talk about Marco Hernandez's ceiling, but it's not as if I expect any player to reach said ceiling (I really can't recall a prospect, particularly in the last 5 years, that I thought would reach their absolute ceiling). All that said, Marco's power potential has always been better than people gave it credit for. He's a guy who, at his peak, if all goes well, could conceivably be a 12-18 HR type of guy. The loft and bat speed suggests a solid enough power ceiling there. Of course, Marco has a big flaw to address offensively (his approach), so that's a big if. That said, I think a power comparison of Marco and Frandy isn't that ... off.

What I find interesting about the de la Rosa/Hernandez comparison from AzPhil is that, unless my memory is failing me, he was never that huge on Marco as a shortstop. I know, off the top, that he critiqued his arm strength (which wasn't criticized elsewhere ... not many people suggest that Marco's arm strength is sub-par for short).

Actually, reading about Francisco (Daniel) Sanchez reminds me that the reports, when he signed, were moderately intriguing. Then, he proceeded to be, offensively, very pedestrian, if not subpar, in DSL. Fascinating to hear that Sanchez's power potential is close to Junior Lake's.

Wouldn't surprise me if it's McNutt's breaking ball that's an issue as well, although I really don't know.

Yeah, that was kind of depressing. I'd hoped he was signed because he looked maybe special as a hitter. If he's just another defense-first guy, we-hope-he'll-hit-enough-someday, that's kind of a bummer.

That's probably unfair, that's just how I felt when I read that. O well, comps are just comps, hopefully he'll not be nearly so limited offensively as Hernandez.

Probably this was actually intended as a compliment by Phil.

He's supposed to be a good hitter. When signed, the bat was supposed to play up at 2B, because there was very little chance of him sticking at SS. The Hernandez comp I'm sure is meant as a compliment. I was hoping(still am) that Frandy has more power potential. I can see Marco having 10-12 HR pop, would like to think Frandy has 20-25 possibilities this early in his career. Guess the reports about his polish are likely true though or they wouldn't be flirting with bringing him over skipping the DSL.

It's Arizona Phil, take any comparisons or evaluations as just a random opinion. It's not like someone who knows their stuff like Badler or Callis said it.
