I have the same reaction to this as I have to Cub fans who complain about Theo not spending money. If there is a good opportunity to build a championship level team and they decide not to do it because of money, then I'll be upset. Until then I'll keep my mouth shut.

When the Cubs have the best record in the league for two years straight, and then hang among the elite when the core of their team is out for the entire season (not sure how to compare Rose being out to a baseball team), I'll expect them to spend money. Kind of like how I expect the Bulls to go all out right now.

There was nothing to go get. Hell, we don't even know if Rose comes back this year. I doubt very seriously they'd beat Miami if he did. I'd rather put off the tax as long as possible, save every asset we can, and make one big deal over the offseason. And I HOPE that Reggie is speaking for Derrick. Another star is needed.

DRose's brother ripped the Bulls for not getting better players, and said something about it possibly being a factor in when he comes back.

Glad to see somebody say something. Granted its hard to find solid upgrades that wont gut your roster, but the Bulls are stagnant and seemingly content with being average. This isn't a championship caliber team.

So you explicitly state you recognize why the Bulls didn't make a move, but then agree with someone slamming them for not making such a move in the very same post?

The NBA trading deadline is a dumping ground.

Well we're 2 years removed from the ECF without much being changed. I do understand its hard to move/acquire players with the cap and luxury tax yet I can ALSO understand/sympathize why people are starting to get antsy.

I can't when being "antsy" seems to be based out of a basic lack of understanding of how this works. Reggie Rose clamoring for the Bulls to go get "good players" doesn't mean anything.

we're starting to hear too much for rose's brother. if rose has something to say he can say it. i'm starting to get the feeling that rose's unit might be a little too over protective.

honestly, the quality of the current team should have no impact on his decision to come back this season. even if we completely sucked, it shouldn't matter. sitting out the whole season because you're a really good team instead of a super duper elite team would be a really shitty move.

Yuuuuuuuuuuuuup.

I remember thinking his family/friends/whatever were too involved when this idea of him sitting out the rest of the year or being further back than predicted was first leaked much further back in the season.

even without rose they're a good amount above average

Reggie Rose, still trying to run Derrick's life. Derrick it's time to tell the guy to be quiet.

I think Reggie is just taking the fall as the bad guy and this is what Derrick really thinks. Which is too bad, if true, because I think this team, if fully healthy, could beat the Heat at least once over the next few years if given the chance.

could be, but that doesn't really sound like derrick rose. i think derrick rose is the guy who wants the challenge of being the guy who "single-handedly" wins a title with no superstars around him. didn't he get criticism for not calling lebron and generally choosing to not recruit other star players?

i think rose would relish the opportunity to come back midseason, off a devastating knee injury, and go on a run with a team nobody thinks is good enough this year.

how dare you not improve the roster when we just said my brother might not even come back this season

Definitely. Not that that dictates how the Bulls are run, but it sure doesn't help when your top player basically flat out says he doesn't think he needs to try and talk anyone into coming (and even kinda openly questioned the need to get another star).

really would suck if this messes with derrick mentally at all. even if reggie is a complete dick and totally wrong, that's his brother. could be ugly if reggie starts taking heat in chicago for this, and i imagine he's going to until rose gets back. good job putting your brother in a horrible and unwinnable situation.

That's reading too much into the comments. I think a good amount of people feel a similar sentiment and or frustrated at the situation. We're going to probably get pounded by Miami until the FA of 2014 if we can land a star caliber player which even then well by losing Deng reducing the net gain.

There are 4 title contenders by my count and you can maybe include Denver making it 5.

I agree that Rose did think this way, but with so many whispers over the past few months about sitting out the season/needing more good players, maybe he's sick of looking up at the Heat.

But I wish someone on the radio had called Rose's brother out on the fact that (a) the Heat were a result of their own player (Wade) trying to convince these guys for years to join him (Rose sent one text to LeBron) and (b) they all agreed to take less money to play together (Rose took the supermax which really hampers the Bulls' ability to make moves).

The Bulls will never land a star player. Chicago is just not an enticing place for players.

This is why I think Reggie's comments are troubling. I think Derrick and Reggie are on the same page about this regardless of what Derrick says in dry, three sentence press releases or whatever and I believe that when Reggie says they need to make moves and Derrick says he doesn't recruit, they're saying Derrick can beat the Heat and Thunder without the help of another major star. I think team Rose believes the Bulls are closer to the title than the Bulls and every sane person with a basketball opinion does and that with some fairly minor tinkering they can get it done. They're wrong, it's troubling and they need to stop going down this Jordanesque anti-front office path. GarPax absolutely need to get another star or two and even if they've never shown the ability to pull the trigger on a major blockbuster move that sends one of their guys out of town in return for a star player, patience is absolutely the right course of action right now. So while I'm not saying we should all just have blind faith that they can pull it off, I am saying that they've done the right thing this year.

Bingo. I think we're getting to the point where Rose needs to actively recruit and hype up Chicago, the city. And though I love him as a player, Rose's off the court decisions, to this point, have been a little concerning i.e. taking the Supermax (you really have to credit the Big 3 of Miami taking a pay cut) when already getting $200m from Adidas and with the team knowingly in a cap crunch, not recruiting other star players, having his f'in brother as his business manager.

While I took a jab at him taking the supermax contract, it doesn't excuse the Bulls for giving Taj Gibson nearly $10m/year for his 7 points and 5 rebounds/game. I understand that Taj offers significant defensive value, but is he really going to get much better than what he already is and does Taj's 25 minute (?)/game position the Bulls as a title contender? Probably not on either account.

Apparently I just need to avoid this thread today.

You guys realize the Bulls are up against the cap, and that it doesn't really matter if Rose recruits top free agents or whatever...we can't afford them....right?

It's not like there's some great move out there that the Bulls could do but just won't.
