My friend told me that he told parents on the first day of practice that they would spend most of the time practicing fielding because when it came to hitting, he'd just learn the kids' swings and he could make sure he hit the bats.

Good strategy if you want to win. Kids are going to be bored out of their skulls at practice. And most at that age need to learn a decent fundamental swing more than anything.
