I don't understand the popularity of horse racing.

Right now, people only ever watch if there's the possibility of a Triple Crown. So, they'll watch the Belmont if one horse already won the other two big races.

So, horse racing is so popular that people watch one race every five years.

Reaching even that level of popularity still baffles me. Of course I have similar feelings about NASCAR, but at least the humans get named as the winners in that event.

But it's not popular. It's very unpopular. It's a completely niche sport. Why are people baffled that an unpopular sport is unpopular?

I'm saying it should never be on national TV or in the public consciousness at all, ever.

Both sports are on the front page of ESPN, the most popular sports website on the internet. Horse racing just 3 days a year, but that's more than I think it warrants. That spot is reserved for the "biggest" news in sports that day. A horse race should never be in that spot, if it were as unpopular as you suggest.

Isn't horse racing a multi-billion dollar industry? I think some are underestimating its popularity.

Okay. That's nice. It's on NBC though so it's still not really on the public consciousness.

A niche group of rich people betting on something doesn't make it popular.

Horse racing attendance and ratings have been going down for decades, tracks are closing and the one thing they hung their hat on, dollars bet, hit a plateau ten years ago and has been going down.

If you think it's mainly rich people betting on horse races you REALLY aren't in tune with the "sport".

i dont get it either. i worked in the sports department at a mid-sized daily for a while during the barbaro thing, and they wanted updates on his condition on the front page every day. WHY THE HELL.

This is probably where you should just admit that maybe you underestimated it's popularity.

I can say I've never watched a horse race on TV (been to one live as a company event). However...

ESPN’s recent online poll concerning the popularity of various sports had horse racing finishing in seventh position out of twenty. The unscientific methodology used would ordinarily call into question the findings, except in this case they are consistent with what the National Thoroughbred Racing Association found in its own surveys.

Not exactly an unbiased source, but the poll data shows pretty clearly that horse racing has some popularity behind it.

That Barbaro thing was maybe when deadspin peaked. The freaks were all over that story.

Seriously, you guys are insane. People talk about it for 15 minutes 2 or 3 times a year.

It's not popular, and it's shrinking.

The Masters is so wildly unpopular. It's on tv for what - 4 days, once a year? I mean, you don't even hear anything about it for probably 9-10 months out of the year.

There are a few horse racing guys on the Score occasionally and from what I heard, that horse wasnt going to win the Belmont anyway, as he was supposedly not very good over long distances, and the reason why no horse can win the 3rd leg is because the Belmont is the longest of the 3 races by a decent amount.
