The East got really interesting after yesterday. All 3 of the 4-2 lost, meaning 7 of the 8 teams in the East are within 1 game of 1st place. 5 of the 7 are within 113.2 points of each other, meaning there's a legit chance for any of those 5 to be in first place at the end of this week.

 

This all comes just as the division games come to an end. Meanwhile, the West has NOBODY within 1 game of 1st place.

Do Japanese hitters just swing at complete garbage? Daisuke walked 2-2.5 guys per 9 innings in Japan and his BB rate doubled upon moving to MLB. Same thing is happening to Darvish. He's about to have as many walks as last year despite throwing 170 fewer innings.

I watched a few Japanese games last week in Nagoya. Four general observations:

 

1) Everyone has that leg kick back and hold for timing (but I believe that forces them to over-commit on offspeed pitches)

2) They swing at a lot of breaking stuff in the dirt

3) Japanese umps call lower zone strikes

4) Incredibly sound on defensive fundamentals
