I like how the Yankees have been all about pinching pennies to avoid the luxury tax and didn't want to acquire any number of pitchers/players who were younger, effective, and under team control for more years, but had no problem shelling out $2.5 million to Andy Pettitte on a minor league contract despite him not having pitched in a full year.

Now THAT'S how you baseball!

I don't understand your point. They only wanted to spend about $2.5m. There weren't a lot of options at those lower prices, so instead of getting a more expensive guy they took a chance on Pettite. Younger, more effective pitchers who were available would cost a lot more than they wanted to spend.

They're spending that money to have him not play in the major leagues for part of the season. He's not gonna get fresh in 2 1/2 weeks, he's going to have to spend at least 3 weeks in the minors, and even then they already have a rotation of Sabathia, Kuroda, Nova, Pineda, and Hughes (with Garcia to fill in in a pinch).

It's purely a PR move. A costly one. It doesn't make sense. I understand there's velocity concerns with Pineda, but when you got guys like Betances and Banuelos waiting in the wings at league minimum who can come up in an emergency, why bother dropping $2.5 million on a fond memory?

They aren't spending money on a memory. And it's not all that costly. They didn't want to spend $9m on more depth, so they spent $2.5m on a guy who could help them when they want him to help them. They don't care about April. The Yankees are going to contend at least through September and almost certaily going to be playoff bound.

jiminy christmas. I saw something that indicated the Pettite contract was not guaranteed so I started trying to find out and ended up throwing on YES, which most sites said was the source of the announcement. Mike Francesa is doing his simulcast and for the last 20 minutes he's just been watching the basketball game and making random comments about them. Very weird.
