People that keep preaching "it's a passing league" are just as bad as the people who want to run the ball more. You do whatever works best. It's only a passing league if it works. The Bears were a good running team, why take that away? The Bears gave up a ton of sacks the last 2 years, why continue to try and pass?

Because their QB is the best player on the field.

And the more you have him throw, the more likely it is for him to be off the field when you don't have him adequately protected from getting hit on most of those passes. Granted, throwing a ton works for Brees, Brady, and Rodgers who are the most talented players on the field, but they also have good protection.

Rodgers got sacked a billion times a couple years ago. Ben gets hit every damn play. Brady was sacked as often this year as Cutler was in his first year with the Bears. The teams that win consistenly throw the damn ball a hell of a lot, and their QBs take sacks. You don't stop passing because of that. The Bears, under Martz and Cutler, could actually complete 3rd and 8 situations, something the Bears never do. They could actually drive down the field. They weren't a good overall offense because their bosses did a horrible job finding them linemen and receivers, but they did what they could with what they had.

They were a league average offense when healthy, there were top 10 in scoring also when healthy. They won't get more productive in the passing game by throwing more behind an inadequate OL and terrible WRs.

That's a personel issue.

So are we throwing it just to throw it or are we throwing it because we're good at it? That's my point. It's a passing league, but the Bears shouldn't be passing just because everyone else is. They suck at it, so they should run more because they were actually good at it.

we are good at it, we have a QB capable of it at a high level, if he gets some help. Becoming a running team neuters the offense

That's a whole bunch of [expletive]. Jay Cutler sucked at throwing for the Bears? Give me a break raw, that's absurd. Caleb Hanie couldn't throw the damn ball. Without Jay Cutler throwing the ball the Bears go 2-30 the past 2 years.

Bears went 19-8 with a healthy Cutler the last 2 years and they weren't anywhere near pass happy. Teams that pass are teams that win only when they are actually good teams. Ask the Eagles.

you mean when they have good quarterbacks. you don't run for the sake of running when your quarterback is aaron rodgers.

The Eagles won a hell of a lot of games and went deep into many playoffs when McNabb was throwing every play and didn't suck. They struggled when McNabb started to fall apart.

the bears suck at passing? jay cutler WAS the offense for the past 3 years. he was all alone fighting zombies on an alien homeworld and he was good at it.

Jared Allen is pretty freaky looking. BJ Raji too.

Phillips saying it was Lovie's call to fire Martz and that Lovie will be in charge of finding the OC.

That's...interesting. Doesn't seem like you can bring in a powerful GM with those parameters.

He's not saying Cutler sucks at throwing the ball. He's saying the Bears do. The Bears are not a great pass blocking team. The Bears drop a lot of throws. The Bears sometimes bail on routes that lead to interceptions. The Bears sometimes have some inappropriate play calls that lead to sacks. They need to get better at these things before they throw more IMO.

i like it because lovie is a good coach, and i want him here because his defensive scheme works and has worked and the players will die for him.

this also sends the message that lovie is NOT on the hot seat and the incoming OC can make himself comfortable. we're bringing in mckenzie, i'd put money on it, and hopefully he'll be able to bring clements, and we'll all be one happy family.

that's building long-term with the coach we have now.

When the Bears hired Angelo he had to keep Angelo in the beginning, coming off two horrible seasons.

GM positions in the NFL are weird. NFL head coaches have much more power than MLB managers. It's not always the case where the GM comes in and hires his guy to coach the team, and that the coach is his underling. Lovie has been head coach for a long time, so he's going to have power, or he's not going to be there.

George isn't a great speaker, but I like what he's saying and how he's saying it. He's blunt and clear.

Is this an online thing?

I can get on board with this. My biggest issues with Lovie are gameday related, which can be helped with coordinators that do their jobs.

I love George calling his mom by her first name.

It sounds to me like Polian would not be in-line for the gig. He was a vice chairman and more than just a GM, but the Bears are looking strictly at a GM to fit in between Phillips and Lovie on the power structure.
