uh... hmm Ok then.

The Chicago Cubs are reportedly close to signing free agent catcher Jason Jaramillo to a minor league contract, according to Tim Dierkes of MLBTR. Jaramillo has spent the past couple years with the Pirates, but they recently non-tendered him after using up his 40-man roster spot to sign lefty Erik Bedard.

It's really hard to care either way about this move. If he's backing up Soto it's a mild disappointment but the odds are pretty good he's just an extra target for spring training and then heads to Iowa to back up whichever one of Castillo/Clevenger doesn't get the MLB gig.

Apparently upon leaving the Red Sox, Theo has become the baseball eqivalent of a shopping addicted former trophy wife who recently weant through a divorce and was left with nothing but the bare necessities. Either that or Billy Beane.

If Tampa is using Molina as a starter, there's a decent shot they're still looking at options. My guess is we could get Wade Davis for Soto. But, would it be possible to get Niemann instead?

I think we could get either plus Brignac.

If so, that needs to happen. I'm dubious of that being realistic, however.....hope I'm wrong

He's just signing possibilities for depth and bodies for Spring Training...

It's a minor league contract.

Sounds like a harbinger of Soto being traded/ Castillo promoted to me.

Or they could plan to have Jaramillo back up Soto to keep Castillo starting in Iowa.

Or they could have just resigned Koyie Hill who can't hit his way out of a wet paper bag any more than Jaramillo but at least knows most of the pitching staff if they don't trust Clevenger.

Soto for Davis is not a good trade. I'm not really interested in any of those guys.

Yeah, giving Soto for Davis would be a terrible trade. Brignac doesn't improve it much, if any. Neimann would be a bit more of an interesting start to a Soto trade, but much like with Travis Wood, I'd want a nice prospect or two to go along with him. Probably two, since Niemann's an older, not quite as good version of Wood.

The way this group is going leads me to believe the former. But you could certainly be right.

If Jaramillo had signed a major league deal, I'd agree with you. However, I'm pretty sure Jaramillo would be marginally cheaper than Koyie and is a bit younger and less proven as being terrible. Jaramillo on a minor league deal is also a non-guaranteed contract, tendering Koyie would have made his roster spot guaranteed.

Yeah, wasn't disagreeing with you, just adding the third possibility. Though if we do trade Soto, I think we could get more value by waiting into the season and giving him a chance to hit his value back up again.
