Statement from Mike Maddux

I’d like to congratulate Dale Sveum and the Chicago Cubs on Dale’s appointment as manager. Dale is one of the best baseball people I know and will make a fine manager. His tireless work ethic, commitment, and communication skills give him the recipe to succeed.

I would like to thank the Cubs for the flattery and opportunity to be considered a managerial candidate. Possibly in the future a managerial position may come to fruition for me.

I am blessed to be with a quality organization, the Texas Rangers, and am looking forward to the 2012 season with high expectations. The DFW area is a great place to live and my family loves it here. Also, I would like to thank the fans whose support of the Rangers has made our jobs even more gratifying.

PS–To the fans I’ve met at the airport, grocery and home improvement stores, thanks for your support. It means a lot.

I am assuming he was releasing that to Rangers fans?

Seems odd that he would release that, almost if saying "Hey, I hope you enjoy that Cubs gig that you got because I dropped out"

these major acts of sports figures using public, local news outlet as stream to communicate wide-seen letters of thanks is kind of the flavor of the lately, huh? i guess this sort of pseudo is it's logical near-extreme.

Flavor of the lately? It's been going on for quite some time now. It might be one of the only things keeping papers alive.

"Possibly in the future a managerial position may come to fruition for me." seems to indicate he was not the first choice.

oh totally, i never really understood all the mental gymnastics everyone was trying to do to assume for absolutely no reason that the only reason he's not manager is because he pulled his name out for family reasons. this letter only makes sense if he wasn't the first choice.

Why doesn't the press release just mean that it didn't work out for whatever reason? Is it really that hard to understand? Some organizations and individuals would rather keep employment details private. Embrace the fact that this is the way your team does business now. That said, the Maddux family exuding class should be no surprise, really. This is a non-story.

It could also mean that he might consider managing when his family situation changes or possibly managing Texas in the future. I agree that I don't understand what all the fuss is about his statement. To me it was just a classy guy thanking people for considering him for a job.
