I'd love any of their big three young arms, but specifically I'd target Anderson/Cahi first. Brett anderson when healthy is filthy...his shutout against the Sox in '10 was the most impressive performance I saw all year....dude was hitting 96 with a top of the line breaking pitch.

Gonzalez I like...one of the guys I used to play with in HS said he's exactly me mechanically and with the fastball/curveball except that he's way healthier and more talented. I do question long term durability and command/control. If we landed Mike Maddux though...

Anyway in order I'd look to grab Anderson, then Cahill, and THEN Gio. I really like Cahill in the long run too, and he could go above Anderson in a given day.

I'd offer something like Jackson, McNutt, Barney, and fodder for Anderdon/Cahill...Possibly have to jump it up a notch....maybe throw in Ben Wells who they might like as a low level upside arm.

Given that Anderson won't pitch most of next year and is coming off of major surgery, I wonder if we could get him for less. He wouldn't help next year, but I'd still give up a good amount to have him for the future.

I like all of these guys. Not sure whether Theo does or not, but if we make a trade, I expect it to be for something like this anyway. Young, controllable guys that fit for the future and possibly the present as well. The Braves guys fall into this category as well, same with a Hellickson type in Tampa.

Isn't Wade Davis kind of the odd man out in the Tampa rotation right now? Didn't he have a lot of promise he's sort of failed to live up to so far?

Yeah, he's kind of the guy without a spot, but I think they could deal anyone other than Price, just depends on who gives them the best return. Davis could still develop into a 2 or 3, so he's a guy I'd be curious about, along with everyone else they have too.

Why is Jackson being thrown into every trade? I understand good young pitching is hard to come by, but the Cubs don't have a lot of up and coming bats in the system as it is. Plus, he's a high OBP player like Theo seems to like. Seems like one of the last guys we should trade.

BJax is a high OBP guy? I thought he projected to something like .350? Good but he's not JD Drew.

And doesn't he strike out in 1/4 of his ABs?

I don't think we need to shop him but I don't know that he's really the type of player Jebodore values highly.

Yeah, most people only project him to be a .350 OBP player because he strikes out 25-30 percent of the time. He'll walk at an excellent percentage, but it will be hard to keep the batting average above .265 with that kind of strikeout rate which limits his OBP value.

Well the two I've brought up so far are for a possible top tier CF and one of two possibly top tier arms...It could even be seen as kind of a backhanded compliment to Jackson.

The obvious answer is that he's our top prospect and if you're going to get a decent player you're going to have to give up something of value.

I'd be willing to give up some good talent for Gio Gonzales. The guy has had a few good seasons and is still young. He could be a rotation staple for 10 years.

I'd really like to go after Gio and kick the tires on Daric Barton. I know Barton's played 1B all of his major league career but he did log 2 innings at 3B in 08' and I believe he came up as a 3B with the Cardinals, he could be someone we look to replace Ramirez if he can play there. I wouldn't have a problem including B. Jackson in a package that landed us those two.

I don't know about Barton. He doesn't impress me much. However, I think Gio is one of the most underrated pitchers in the game today and has ace potential. I think he'd thrive here, especially if Mike Maddux was hired as manager. Cut those walks down and you have a surefire #1.

My worry with Gonzalez is that we'd be trading for a guy coming off his best year. He's got two plus pitches in his fastball/curveball, but theres work to do.

If we landed Mike Maddux then bring in whoever...

I'd be interested in Barton on the cheap if they struck out on Pujols/Fielder.

From MLBTR:

A's lefty Gio Gonzalez remains a viable trade option for many teams, including the Red Sox and Marlins. Meanwhile, the Athletics probably aren’t ready to contend. The club appears to be buying time until they can build a new stadium in the San Jose area. Until then, they may be in the mode of developing players and dealing them for players who might emerge a few years from now.

Would Barney + Szczur/Colvin + Vitters + Carpenter/Dolis/Jay Jackson be enough to get him.

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that the Rays "are expected to be willing" to trade Wade Davis this offseason.

Cafardo writes that the Rays are willing to listen to offers for James Shields, but, not surprisingly, they'd prefer to deal Davis for an outfielder or a catcher. Davis, 26, posted a 4.45 ERA and 1.38 WHIP over 29 starts this season and could be under team control through the 2017 campaign.

Out of curiosity, how do you look at Szczur and Colvin as interchangeable pieces in a deal?

I wonder if they'd have interest in Byrd? Byrd + spare parts for Davis could be a decent move. Or expand off of that and see if we could get Upton and Davis.

I just thought the choice would be theirs as to younger, speedier, less power to more power with some experience.

Gonzalez is a great trade target because Oakland may be more willing than some of the other teams that might deal SP to take lower level prospects. He's also four years from FA, which means he'd be more worth a substantial asking price than alternative candidate.
