Nooooooooo

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Indians and Grady Sizemore are having "serious discussions" about a one-year contract.

One source pegs the chances of a reunion at "70-30" while another tells Rosenthal that it's "very likely." The Indians declined Sizemore's $9 million club option late last month, so they would presumably attempt to work out a deal for lesser salary. The 29-year-old is drawing plenty of interest around the league, but it might be the best career move to stick with the organization (and perhaps more importantly, the medical staff) that knows him best and attempt to hit the free agent market again next offseason.

I wonder if this news is good for the Marlon Byrd market. I know Byrd has nowhere near Sizemores possible reward, but for teams looking for a 1 year commitmant for an outfielder he was a great option. The FA outfield market features Josh Willingham, David DeJesus, Michael Cuddyer, and Jason Kubel, who arent bad options, but I could understand a team not wanting to make more than a 1 year commitmant to any of those guys. Byrd can play pretty much any OF spot and has a solid bat as well. To a team without a ton of money to burn, I'm sure the Cubs would eat a substantial portion of his salary for the right return.

Sounds like Cleveland is going to keep Sizemore. I guess this means we have Cespedes higher on our priority list than Grady, or else we could certainly make an offer as good or better than Cleveland's rumored deal that looks to be in the realm of 9 mill AFTER incentives.

Either that or the Cubs have read his medical records and don't think he can really play a significant amount.

Wouldn't the team he's played for have the best knowledge of his medical records? And wouldn't the fact that team is a small market team and doesn't have much cash to burn also alude to the fact they're very confident he's going to be healthy? I sure think so.

I'd really like to end up with one of Sizemore / Cespedes. I'd honestly prefer Cespedes, but I was hoping we'd find a way to get Grady on the team as the bidding for Yoenis may get pretty intense.

He wouldn't help immediately, but Jorge Soler wouldn't be a bad Cuban consolation prize if the Cubs miss out on Cespedes.

But Sizemore is pretty intriguing and I really hope the Cubs can nab him.

I agree with you, but our medical staff may have more doubts than their medical staff. Also, I think the expectation level for the Cubs is higher than the Indians. Finally, the risk factor for the Cubs is higher than the Indians because they could possibly use him to DH if he has problems playing the field.

I'm hoping we end up with Soler no matter what.

Any thoughts on where Soler might slot in to our top 10 (using BA's, for discussion's sake)? 3rd?

Most likely anywhere between first to fourth. Might be a good question to add to the ones for Callis, though.

Sizemore signs for 5 million, with 4 million in incentives, per Olney. No option year, but that's a nice deal for Cleveland.

This kind of makes me sad. I wanted us to get him, especially at that kind of a deal. Of course, he is VERY risky, but not as much as giving bigtime money to Cespedes, even though I want him on our team too.

The no option thing is atually a good thing for Sizemore, gambling on himself. Kind of like Penas 2011 contract where if he looked hard enough he could have got a 2 year deal or a 1 year with an option or 2, but this way if he has a nice bounceback year he could get a nice 3-4 year deal in 2013.

Bummer.

He's obviously comfortable in Cleveland and it makes sense for him to continue working with the same medical crew if he feels they've been doing a good job. Would have been nice, though.

Time to get Cespedes and Soler. :)
