Having lived through the nightmare that was Dusty Baker, I find I have a hard time getting upset by the idea of other managers.

A recent Score update said that Theo is rumored to have arrived in town.

What color was the source's shirt?

A tasteful lavender.

I, of course and as always, could be very wrong, but my guess is that all this means the Cubs will not be major players for Fielder or Pujols.

It just doesn't seem like the Epstein/Moyer style to do that sort of deal so shortly after taking over. I keep coming back to the due diligence the Red Sox did on Crawford, hiring a PI to follow him months before he became a free agent. Epstein may have had some time to think about the Cubs, but it can't have been that much time.

My guess is that their immediate offseason focus is pitching. Trying to make two or three viable MLB starters appear in one offseason is no easy task and may take up most of the available resources.

In Epstein We Trust. Have no problem with Ryno since we will have an organizational philosophy in which everyone will play along. Ryno under Hendry was a different ballgame. With Ryno and Theo on board, and I'm assuming this is basically all but done at this point, Chicago media must be having a wet dream.

I sure hope not, there's plenty of time for due diligence and the such even still. You don't need a PI to know that Fielder hits up Burger King every day.

I would hope with his budget that he'd at least be hitting up Five Guys instead.

so kaplan is reputable now when it comes to sources.

got it.

Kaplan broke the story that Kerry Wood was coming back to the Cubs last year. He also reported the Cubs were closing in on a deal for Garza a few days before it happen. Yes Kaplan is stupid, annoying and a big meathead. But he does have some type of inside info, and it's not like him to report stuff that's not true. So of course take this as a grain of salt, but don't totally write it off as nonsense either. Because Kaplan doesn't usually report false nonsense, and when he does make claims like this it's usually true.

Didn't the Kapman also break the news of the Hendry firing?

Epstein Limbo Day 8

Odds of deal completion: 80%

Page goal: 20

Topics of conversation: Chicago media's bizarre reverse boner for Crane Kenney, attempts by the Red Sox to spin the Cubs as incompetent, trying to learn to love Ryne Sandberg.

I don't think it's that bizarre. We just don't really know what it's about. But clearly they've either had many run-ins with him or have heard enough off-the-record gossip about him that they pretty much all think he's a clown and hate him.

Bernstein even admitted that he really can't say that he has hurt the Cubs in any tangible way yesterday (don't mistake that for him backing off him, though - he still did nothing but talk [expletive] about him).

Didn't catch that one.. I was listening on the drive into work, but admittedly not too attentively.

Getting ready for his coronation confirmed.

“Theo does go into the office every day,’’ acknowledged Lucchino. “But Ben Cherington’’ - Epstein’s aide-de-camp, and the consensus favorite to take over - “is playing a larger role than he has in the past.’’

Most employees are walked to their car when they agree to go work elsewhere. Any worries about Epstein acting as a double agent?

“We haven’t encountered problems like that in light of the way we’ve been operating,’’ said Lucchino.

It's really hard to come up with a national sports media figure like Gammons who is such a completely unabashed fanboy of one particular team. I guess Bill Simmons, but he came up through blogs and "new media" where you're not required to be objective. There's ex-players in the media who unabashedly cheer for their former teams, like Michael Irvin and Joe Theisman, but that's different from a hard beat reporter that came up through the journalism ranks. Maybe Beano Cook with Notre Dame. Edited by Elrhino

Is that article that was mentioned yesterday in which Cherington answered questions as though he was the GM?

Joe Buck isn't a reporter, but he's the closest thing I can think of to a national media member being an obvious fan boy of a team in the sport he is supposed to cover nationally/without bias.

Just listened to a 670 scoreboard update and no mention of Epstein being in town already. I'm pretty sure they'd be repeating that each update if they had it.
