I quoted your answer because I foolishly assumed you grasped the fact that if the Cubs lose Epstein, they will hire someone else to be their GM.

Hence, your saying "Of course not getting Epstein would "hurt" more than losing, say, Jackson and McNutt in the long run" is equivalent to saying "Of course not getting Epstein and hiring another GM instead would "hurt" more than losing, say, Jackson and McNutt in the long run".

No, you were trying to get people to pick between losing top prospects or "losing" Epstein for an indefinite period of time due to the stupid "nuclear option." If you meant otherwise you would have actually asked whether it "hurt" more to hire Epstein and lose top prospects or to hire a different GM candidate without giving up as much. It's not like that's some kind of cryptic, complicated question, or like it's the same as what you were actually trying to get people to answer. You were hung up on the dumb idea that the Red Sox could drag this out indefinitely.

You're wrong about what I was asking. The "nuclear option" I described would be telling the Red Sox to stick it, and move on to plan B.

Sure it was; don't give a [expletive] at this point.

Let me see if I understand. The Red Sox have the following options:

Play hard ball which causes them to NOT get any prospects, have their current disgruntled GM in a much diminished role (which probably has legal consequences), and the guy they've already said will take over as GM in position of taking over for said disgruntled GM while that guy is still there. Not to mention the PR nightmare it causes, along with the fact that they waste $6.5 mil and the GM walks after next year with no return a d takes whoever he wants with him.

Or

They give up said GM for what the Cubs are offering.

The Cubs choices are:

Hold out until the Red Sox cave.

Or

Go hire some other GM that will provide them with 95%+ of what Epstein does, save a couple mil per year and keep all of their prospects.

And we're supposed to believe the Red Sox have the advantage in this?

OK. The card they hold is that we want Epstein, and they know it.

But the reality is, we're in a position of being an unsuccesful baseball team. One more year of badness, in the face of a huge future boost, isn't out of the question for us.

Remember, they don't control him forever, and we know it. Also, he clearly doesn't want to be there anymore, and the whole Boston organization knows it.

Have you ever tried to work in a place where you didn't want to be, and everyone knew you didn't want to be there? Uncomfortable is an extreme understatement.

I agree with all of this. I would refine it by saying, "we want Epstein, they know it, and they know we need him in place ASAP."

They want and need him gone for all sorts of reasons, all of which have been repeated many times here. They just don't need it done ASAP. If they let Theo twist for a week or two, that limbo hurts the Cubs more than it hurts the Sox. So what motivation do they have to compromise on their offer right away?

I guess the threat of the Cubs walking away is the answer to that question. My point is, the Cubs don't want to walk away, and move on to plan B, and the Sox know this, too.

what would hurt more losing epstein or if your dick got set on fire heh got you there

awesome

What's even funnier is that the cool kids are going to call me a meatball any minute now, while the guy talking about lighting dicks on fire is a hero.

OK, I'm going to make this as clear as I can possibly make it: THE CUBS DO NOT NEED THEO EPSTEIN ASAP. They need a new GM pretty soon, but that does not automatically translate to needing only Epstein "ASAP." This would be leverage for the Sox only if Theo was the Cubs only choice/option.

Your whole idea hinges on the idea that the Cubs are somehow even remotely cornered in this. They're not. They have other candidates besides Theo. They don't need him. They may not want to walk away (which isn't an advantage for the Red Sox since they don't want to walk away either), but they can easily do so and that's that. The only reason the Cubs would even consider "twisting" for a week or two would be if they actually needed Theo Epstein ASAP and nobody else was available. It's not a viable option for the Red Sox. That's their motivation. They don't have the leverage you think they do.

That's an insult to meatballs. I'd prefer "davearm2 posts the dumbest things that anyone has ever posted here, and this was once a place regularly populated by Da Bum."
