Just throwing his name back out there as a good trade target. He's got nowhere to play with the Angels. Scioscia has been touting Trumbo as an MVP candidate. Now you might think one of them could DH or play an outfield corner, but Bobby Abreu has already had to move from outfield to DH because of Bourjos forcing Hunter and Wells to the corners... and that's without factoring in Mike Trout forcing his way into things.

Rumor has the Angels sending Trumbo to try to learn 3B this offseason but I just don't see it happening, not with the premium Scioscia places on defense.

Morales would probably cost some decent prospects (as I'm sure the Angels would rather trade Wells/Abreu), but given the uncertainty surrounding his health and his position, I'd have to think he could be had. He's not Pujols and he's not Fielder... but if the bidding on them gets too crazy, we may be better served by bringing back Aramis, signing Wilson, and trading for Morales. It's probably better than a 3 year contract for Carlos Pena, anyways. (though don't get me wrong, I have nothing bad to say about Pena but point out his age).

Erm...

"If we reach our goal, there's no doubt he has to get some most valuable player consideration," Scioscia said. "If you take him out of our lineup this year, we're not even talking about a pennant race."

Yeah...

Hard to be that valuable with an OBP under .300, let alone most valuable. But hey, Scioscia loves Jeff Mathis too. And he obviously gets his way with the Angels FO.

hey fangraphs has him in the top 50 in WAR among AL players, tied with brendan ryan and kurt suzuki. his obp is almost .300, which i'm pretty sure is awesome for a first baseman.

Wouldn't the Angels be one of the teams in the Pujols/ Fielder sweepstakes? That could be their motivation to move Morales.

Maybe Fielder for DH, but the Angels have a first base logjam. Trumbo, despite his terrible OBP, is putting up a 116 OPS+ which is respectable, especially for a rookie. Morales was a premier bat when healthy and he should, ideally, be good to go next year, and they just draft C.J. Cron, who has injury concerns of his own but has so far in 34 games in the minors this year (his first) he crushed 13 homers and OPS'd 1.000. Small sample size, but he's a big bat who will be coming through their system.

Going after Pujols or Fielder would probably be smart for just about any team, but the Angels are one team that probably doesn't need one of them as much as other teams do, and on top of that I'm not so sure they can take on that type of contract with the big money they have tied up in their players already.

I don't know..... I'm kind of wary of taking a chance on a guy who hasn't played the last 2 years because of injury unless we get him dirt cheap.

+1

If we're going to go after a young 1B bat who might be pushed out by his organization I'm in the Logan Morrison camp. I wish the Mariners would push Justin Smoak out...

by the way, i would just like to point out that vernon wells has been a zero win player this year, while the three-headed monster of hank conger, bobby wilson and jeff mathis have been worth -0.5 wins (according to fangraphs) while compiling a sterling .193/.255/.304/.559 line on the year. the main they traded to get wells, mike napoli, has been worth 5.5 wins. (also, juan rivera, who was dealt away, has been worth 1 win)

the angels are 5 games behind the rangers and 3 games behind the red sox in the AL west. you do the math.

Not to mention Napoli is doing it for the Rangers.

Haha I didn't even think about that. What a horrific trade (and everyone knew it was bad at the time, and questioned why the angels would give up a player with value - Napoli - to take on the full value of a disastrous contract)
