Carpenter has been the product of some bad luck this year. His .318 BABIP is the highest it has been since he was with the Blue Jays. Has a FIP and xFIP of 3.13 and 3.40 compared to his 3.75 ERA. His general numbers suggest he's been league average this year (97 ERA+, 1.29 WHIP) but he's been better than advertised.

 

This is a good deal for the Cardinals. And they freed up a few million to spend in the offseason as a result (posturing to pay Pujols big?).

Yeah, having the tandem of Theriot-Schumaker has hurt him. He's dropped his homers and walks and struck out more batters. If this isn't a clear sign that we need to send those two runts packing, I dunno what is.

Like I said over there, it'll be interesting to see what happens if Carp's spot in the rotation lines up with an early Brewers matchup next year. I hope it does.
