After AzPhil's report last week, I'll be very curious if there's any word on whether or not he was simply throwing just fastballs. I'd guess, with that many innings, he probably had to go to some secondary pitches, but not certain.

how long is guzman going to be in daytona? this is his 11th outing for them.

Yeah, I don't understand. If the plan is for him to get to Chicago on September 1st, you'd think they'd bump him up to Tennessee.

I heard he was 83-86 last outing before this one.

ouch wasnt he sitting at 92-94 at arkansas state university college prep or where ever the heck he was from?

Lets hope he can get his weight back and start pitching like he was because 86 only cuts it if you are jamie moyer.

Agreed - does mono and weight loss (from last off season) take 10 mph off a fastball??

i can't speak to mono because i've never had it, but i had double pneumonia in 8th grade and lost 25 or 30 lbs, and went from swimming in one of the two fastest lanes during practice to swimming in the slowest lane. i had no stamina and no strength at all.

i don't know if simpson will get back what he had, but i can imagine that a particularly severe case of mono could really have a detrimental effect on one's athletic ability for a prolonged period.

I got a reply about Carillo on his last start that he wouldn't be a difference making reliever. And, while that's probably true, he's on one hell of a run this year. If he can at least make the Cubs roster and contribute in the middle innings, that wouldn't be a bad turn of events. Very impressive numbers.

On the surface, there's a decent chance that Carrillo's performance in AA has been fairly lucky this year. The bigger issue for him right now, IMO, is that he's viewed as an organizational arm. In 2010, he was shifted down to Daytona, a level he had success at in 2008, because they needed someone to fill a role. He probably won't get shifted down to the A ball ranks again, but he's been bouncing between AA/AAA, and as better guys come up, age and mediocre stuff may be issues that face him. Perhaps he needs to make a Hung-Wen Chen type deal with the org (I didn't realize that Chen's deal with the Cubs to go to Mexico was that he would go provided that, once the Mexican League ended, he would be guaranteed a starting or closing job somewhere in the org - AzPhil reported on this recently).

Sounds about right and probably justified. I'm just sick of seeing guys with supposed good stuff come up and light the stadium on fire with their gas cans time and again. Like most teams in baseball, the revolving door of bad from the 10th, 11th, and 12th men on the pitching staff is nauseating. Why not give a guy a shot who has never really had a terrible ERA or WHIP?
