Strict salary cap, draft pick compensation, franchise player tags? Anything to give the small market teams more leverage for when their stars want to bolt to the beach.

Punish the players reward the absurdly rich guys. Got it.

Yup. And the absurdly rich have to share with the less absurdly rich.

I'm not sure how anyone could question the fact that teams like New Orleans and Charlotte are losing millions

Who cares about New Orleans and Charlotte??? Amirite?

Read the Gladwell article that tree referenced.

Until being in a big market can make you lucky enough to draft the true franchise players that come along every so often, parity won't be that big an issue. There's been fewer teams winning the titles over the years because the NBA champion is almost always one of the top 3-4 or teams in the league even though half the teams make the playoffs.

Also, I wouldn't consider KG leaving the TWolves a case of a superstar pushing his way into a bigger market. They gave it more than a fair shot in Minnesota. They just weren't good enough.

I'd also like it if everyone stopped trying to turn everything into the NFL. The parity in the NFL is a huge negative. The NFL players union is a [expletive] joke. They're the most popular league because of the structure of the sport not because the Bengals are 6-3. Nobody gives a [expletive].

Answer: 11 instead of 9!

All the way back to the beginning (1950)? 15 (though 1 of those teams no longer exists at all)!

Why did you only go back 30 years?

Yeah they do. It's interesting to see them be competitive with Pitt and Baltimore. Instead of just stepped over year after year. I'd venture a guess that a lot of people give a [expletive]. Divisional races between more than 2 teams is unpopular? Looks good for the NFC North, and that Detroit team no one cared about for 15 years.

And no one's trying to turn the NBA into the NFL. I think the owners made that clear with multiple concessions to the players. Like no salary cap. It's called closing the gap with a few borrowed ideas.

Aren't you a Pacers fan tfarks? 99.8% of the difference between the Bulls and the Pacers in the last 25 years is that the Bulls were lucky enough to get the #3 pick in the 1984 draft and the #1 pick in the 2008 draft while Indiana got stuck with the 11th pick in the 1987 draft, not because Chicago is a bigger/sexier market.

The Bulls were extremely non descript in the post Jordan, pre-Rose years and pretty much a basketball backwater before Jordan.

Because a trend started. One that Stern had a lot to with.

Indubitably. But that's why I said it's not about every team getting to win. Especially in a sport where 1 person can be so dominant.

But how do the Pacers compete with the Lakers spending twice as much? It's like racing Usain Bolt and giving him a head start.

Wait, what? The trend of a relatively small group of teams winning the title didn't start then. It was arguably there from the very beginning.

Again, we've only had 15 different teams win the title since 1950.
