Mitchell Traver, a HS RHP with lots of upside, has to undergo shoulder surgery. He was probably a 2nd round talent. He'll miss up to 3 months. Unsure whether this takes him off boards or not.

Not sure if it's worth it to have to listen to @thekapman:

@jimcallisBA I'll be talking #Cubs & #mlbdraft w/@thekapman on @WGN720Sports in Chicago at 2 pm CT.

Apparently Goldstein is on next after Callis.

@Kevin_Goldstein Draft radio today: TSN 1050 Toronto at 6pm ET, 610 Sports Radio in Houston at 5:30 pm CT, The Score 670 in Chicago at 6pm CT.

Callis and Goldstein sticking to their Almora prediction though Goldstein thinks if Correa makes it to 6, the Cubs would think long and hard.

Goldstein also said he thought Giolito makes it to UCLA. This after tweeting this 30 minutes ago:

@Kevin_Goldstein For the first time, if I published a mock right now, Giolito would be in it.

“Yo estaba como a diez pasos de Theo Epstein (presidente de operaciones), cuando se viró y dijo, ‘esto es increíble’”, continuó Rodríguez en referencia a la reacción del ejecutivo tras ver a Correa batear con fuerza hacía todos los ángulos.

Which roughly translates to:

Google Translate[/url]"]"I was about ten feet from Theo Epstein (president of operations), when you turned and said, 'this is unbelievable,'" Rodriguez continued, referring to the executive's reaction after seeing a swing Correa was all angles.

To clear that up a little bit...

"I was about ten feet from Theo Epstein (president of operations) when he turned and said, 'This is incredible,'" continued Rodriguez in reference to the reaction of the executive after seeing Correa hit with power to all angles (fields).

That's best case scenario for us. Minnesota is a wildcard. if they don't take Buxton, it's likely Seattle would. Perfect pick for us is for Minnesota to take Zunino. May not be likely, but definitely possible. I like Almora a lot, but if Correa is available as well and we pass, I'll be a bit disappointed, even with our guys, who I certainly trust.

Thanks. I got pretty much the same thing but I'm not fluent in Spanish so I erred on the side of Google Translate.

For those who missed @thekaplan's interview with Callis:

http://www.csnchicago.com/baseball-chicago-cubs/cubs-talk/BAs-Jim-Callis-on-Cubs-draft-options?blockID=718734&feedID=10336

"I think they'll get a player comparable to what they got last year at No. 9," Callis said, referring to the Cubs' selection of Javier Baez ninth overall in 2011. "Last year was a deeper draft, but they should get a good player. Even in a down draft, you're better off picking at the top, even with the new rules in spending. At least you get to pick the cream of the crop."

Callis believes the Cubs will wind up taking Albert Almora, a high school outfielder out of Florida.

"He's less toosly than [projected first overall pick, outfielder Byron] Buxton, but he still has a lot of plus-tools and he's more polished," Callis said. "The ceiling is not quite as high as Buxton's, but the floor is higher. There's less risk. He's a player with a lot of tools and a lot of aptitude, which is a tremendous combination."

...

"Gun to my head, I might take Correa," Callis said. "If you dream on him, you could see Troy Tulowitzki with Correa. Max Fried is the best high-school pitcher in the draft and he's left-handed...It's a tough call, but that's a pleasant problem to have. At least you have three very attractive options there. If you were picking 11th or 12th in the draft, you'd be looking at a totally different type of player."

"@kileymcd: Hearing more team/player matches. Appears clubs have Zunino lower than media. I said a month ago it was 50-55 tools, no 60s & some stiffness"

"@kileymcd: One team in the double digits still thinks they could get Zunino & I'm hearing he won't go third, could slide farther than expected."

Callis says Astros have NOT decided on top pick and are deciding between 5 guys. Appel, Gausman, Buxton, Correa, and probably Almora.

Is it possible the Cubs get creative and pick Giolito at 6 knowing he likely declines. They could then overslot on the supplementary and most of the top 10 rounds with the savings and pick the high level talent they otherwise would not have been able to. They would also secure the 7th overall pick in next years draft which has more top end high ceiling talent by most accounts.

Would this hypothetical even be a smart thing to do or am I over thinking this?

If we don't sign the #6 pick, we lose that slot value from our allotment.

@kileymcd After my Zunino tweets, a couple guys texted they still think he's going 3rd but have heard the same things & he could slide if SEA passes

@kileymcd Then another guy said either Appel or Buxton is getting to 3 and may be ahead of Zunino on SEA's board.

@kileymcd Then I called another scout and we ended up talking about "Summer Catch" (which I haven't seen) and if Matthew Lillard deserved an Oscar.

well they may want to hurry up and decide, because the draft is tomorrow.

ABTY's latest from the PSD boards

Hearing Zunino is off Cubs board for 6... Almora, unless a top 5 surprise in which case it sounds like a pitcher...

http://forums.prosportsdaily.com/showthread.php?p=22399200#post22399200

Also...

Also hearing: 'Flags' on Zimmer seem to be getting 'taken care of' and some Royals exes starting to feel more comfortable with a potential pick... doesn't change McCullers side deal, yet... Learning the info 24 hours out on the draft comes fast and changes on a dime...

If we do take a position guy at 6, I am going to be hoping like hell we have some pitching fall to us at 43 and 56. Smoral, Weickel, or Sims would be a great gift.

I like those guys a lot if we have an pre-draft underslot deal with Almora.

But if Theo gets lucky and Buxton or Correa drops, I don't think we will have enough room under the cap to take those overslots (Smoral would be a big overslot at 43). So I am hoping Theo takes Correa or Buxton at 6 and a Puerto Rican P or Mooneyham (all of which seem like they will take an underslot deal).

Really I hope they take Giolito with the first pick, and then offer him below slot until he starts pitching like a future ace again. That way the Cub's either get a front line starter (with impact potential) or they get a high pick (+$) in next year's deeper draft. I think that is the best outcome, but I doubt Theo wants to come out of his first draft telling fans "just wait until next year".

And while I am putting all of my draft hopes here... I really, really want Chase Mullins. The Cubs need an uber-projectable lefty in their system.
