Just read this morning that both Tilson (Illinois) and Burdi (Louisville) are now expected to go to college.

Doesn't sound like he'll make it to Lexington:

 

Lefthander Jerad Grundy earned a scholarship to Miami out of Johnsburg (Ill.) HS, but after pitching just 18 innings as a freshman in 2010, he transferred back home to Heartland CC. With an 88-92 mph fastball that touches 94 and a slider that generates swings and misses, he has the weapons to be a late-inning reliever in pro ball. His size (6 feet, 183 pounds) and maximum-effort delivery probably will prevent him from remaining a starter, though he does flash an average changeup. A 46th-round pick of the Rangers out of high school, Grundy has committed to Kentucky for 2012.

 

Also, where did you read the info on Tilson and Burdi?

 

BA have said for some time now that they have signability questions.

JD (Illinois): Hi Jim, What's the buzz for high school players in the draft? In particular, where does Charlie Tilson (New Trier H.S., Winnetka, IL) go?

 

Jim Callis: Tilson goes to my oldest son's high school, so I've followed him closely. He hasn't quite lived up to his stellar Area Code Games performance and he's strongly committed to college, so I think he goes in the sandwich or second round. He's one of the tougher players to sign in the draft, but not impossible.

 

Rich (Chicago, IL): I have seen your reports on the IL draft class, specifically Nick Burdi and Charlie Tilson. The weather in the midwest was terrrible this spring does this factor in the decision from scouts on where these guys may go? They performed well during showcases the past year.

 

Jim Callis: The weather factors in that it made it harder to see players this spring, but scouts saw the players at the showcases and know what they're capable of in that environment.

Tilson and Burdi will go to school. Grundy will sign. Farrell is the sleeper of the group. Perricone, I liked more than tilson and burdi but has fallen off. Bad year for IL

The info I saw on them was a small tidbit in the Tribune. Who knows if they're info is solid

Watching the 4-5 Illinois games on TV the past week, I can't believe Willie Argo is rated that highly. I understand it's a down year in Illinois, but he doesn't impress me as a major league potential player whatsoever. Adam Davis looks much more projectable than Argo.

BA omitted Kansas State outfielder Nick Martini from the list. He played his high school ball in the Northwest suburbs. He was co-Big 12 player of the year last season as a sophomore, and led K-State in hitting all three years that he's been there. He is a pure hitter with great speed, average defense in left or center field. Should be taken somewhere between rounds 3-5.

No they didn't omit him. Martini is their 8th ranked prospect in the state of Kansas and their 172nd best prospect in the nation.

I shouldve mentioned that Thompson should be drafted and rated higher. 6'3 lefty sitting 88-91 and committed to a JUCO.

Anyone know anything about Magallones from Providence?

 

I know they were ranked #1 in the state for a while and as high as #17 nationally. Sending 4 pitchers D1 -- don't see that in Illinois very often.

 

I feel like it's been a while since Providence has churned out any big time prospects. Honel was my age (2001) and Pignatiello a year older, don't remember much since them.

Tyler McNeely's dad played in the Cardinals minor league system and then later in his career on my dad's slow-pitch softball team. Mike (tyler's dad) is a really nice guy and has a canon for an arm. I remember when Tyler was born and Mike had to miss a tournament. This makes me feel old.
