Nick Struck is doing his best Robert Whitenack impersonation today. Through 5, he's allowed 2 hits, 0 runs, struck out 7 while walking 1. His numbers on the season now stand at 19.2 IP, 21 H, 7 ER, 15 K, 4 BB.

Junior Lake is having himself a day. 3-3 and a triple short of the cycle. BA is up to .317

his OBP is probably up to .312

I know, no walks on the year. On this day, however, I will cut him some slack on that front. It's hard to draw a walk when you go 4-for-4. He's got 2 stolen bases as well. That makes 5 on the year against only 1 caught stealing. He stole all of 13 last year.

Of course, as soon as I wrote this, Struck gives up 2 runs. At least it happened late and might be attributable to fatigue.

i'm wondering about vitters' approach so i'm going to check the gamecasts to see when he's swinging. so far these were his PAs today:

-ground out on 1-0 count

-home run on 1-0 count

-ground out on 0-1 count (first pitch called strike)

-ground out on 2-2 count (called strike, swinging strike, ball, foul, ball, ground out)

Not a lot of patience today.

Same number of home runs, walks, and strikeouts now on the season. Very strange.

BA of .273 with a BABIP of .245 so far. That's also unusual.

Not for Vitters. He's been pretty consisently a really low BABIP guy, just like Brett Jackson has consistently been a really high BABIP guy.

In Vitters case, probably the combo of being slow, slow out of the box, and hitting a lot of weakish grounders probably contributes.

Agreed, but I was more referencing the fact that his BABIP is 28 points below his BA as the unusual part. He has had 2 extended stops where he had a very low BABIP (Daytona 2009 and Tennessee 2010) but both of those his BABIP ended up 15-20 points above his BA not 28 points lower.

Yeah, that is pretty remarkable.

Micah gibbs is also kind of a small-sample funny-stats guy.

His OBP is 100 points above his slugging.

And his .475 OBP is quite high.

Also odd to be such a solidly built guy (he lists at 225/5'11") but have no power. (He's hitting .344, but only one XBH thus far.)

Craig, Austin Reed is alive and...I wouldn't say well since he had a poor outing but anyways:

RHP Austin Reed (Cubs 2010 12th round draft pick out of Rancho Cucamonga HS - Rancho Cucamonga, CA) had a poor outing, walking five A’s hitters in just two innings (throwing 48 pitches, but only 22 strikes). The 19-year old Reed has electric stuff, but he also occasionally suffers from bouts of wildness, as was the case today.

Also, Su-Min Jung appears nearly ready to be done rehabbing at Fitch:

21-year old RHP Su-Min Jung followed Wellemeyer to the mound, and while he was hit fairly hard at times (allowing three runs—two earned--on three singles, a double, and a triple), the Korean youngster was able to throw three innings and close to 60 pitches, so he could be about ready to complete his rehab assignment and get moved up to either Peoria or Daytona, if the Cubs choose to do so.

Hicks taken out in the 5th. 8K/2BB/1HR/2ER (so far).

Szczur at .238 for the moment.

At least in terms of results, Nate appears spot on comparing Hicks to Archer.
