On a more specific note, I'm curious about just what to expect from Wood. It's interesting that you seem to expect him to be great (if healthy) since he was terrible for about a full year and a half with Cleveland and then even though he was great for half a year in New York, there seemed to be quite a bit of luck involved.

I know we shouldn't expect the dominant numbers he posted with the Yankees, but is he that likely to be great if he stays healthy, or is he more of a performance question mark?

While he was with the Yankees, Mariano Rivera taught him how to get people out.

And just brushing against Jeter a few times while walking past him in the dugout probably made Wood a winner.

Wood has actually been to the playoffs 4 times as a Cub.

Yeah but we would have won Game 7 in 2003 if Wood had come in contact with Jeter.

Truth.

Derek Jeter's intangibles and excellence are kind of like herpes. Even if there is no visible breakout, there's still the risk (nay, chance) for it to spread!

Marcos Mateo. Pretty good so far. If he keeps this up, Mateo/Marshall/Wood/Marmol is a pretty damn good way to end the game.

Save Samardzija and Grabow and Russell for the blowouts. Russell for LOOGY work, maybe.

Russell now has over 50 innings of MLB relief work with a 1.33 WHIP and a 4/1 K/BB. He gives up a bunch of HR, but he's perfectly fine for middle relief. He's also very good against LH like you mention, although he gives up HR to them too.

Right. Grabow's perfectly serviceable if used correctly, too.

Unbelievable.

that statement was a "so far" statement. Maybe Shark and Mateo will post 0.00 ERA's for the rest of the way and then you can tell me I was wrong

Russell's been good in relief. Mateo's been very promising. Having 5 solid or better guys in a bullpen is something most teams would kill for, so you're wrong now.

And our setup/closer situation is probably elite

while mateo might be "promising," his results as a major league pitcher have not been solid or better. nor has russell, whose decent 1.3 WHIP is damaged by the 11 home runs allowed in 52 innings. it would be more accurate to say that mateo has been lousy and russell has been solid against LH batters while throwing batting practice to RH batters.

Yes, congratulations, you've realized that Russell is a LOOGY. Going into yesterday Mateo's numbers were very, very good and not "lousy" at all. Obviously, his appearance yesterday wasn't ideal, but it was exacerbated by a cheap infield single, not getting an obvious strike 3 call and a bloop single being bumbled by Fukudome into a double that put guys on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. To then come back and be only a strike away from getting out of that just emphasizes what had been seen from Mateo so far this year and shows how useful he can be. Relievers aren't going to be perfect, and yesterday's outcome was far from perfect, but to just label the bullpen as useless junk outside of Marshall and Wood and Marmol is incorrect. It's a good bullpen being exposed too much due to the starters struggling to go 5-6 innings almost every game so far this season.

Saying Mateos lousy as a result of last night outing isnt much different from saying Samardjzia good because he threw 2 solid innings. He was a strike away from being out of it before giving up the double, which probably rattled him a bit with the meat of the Rockies lineup coming up. Im not ready to crown Mateo yet, as weve seen guys like Caridad, Ascanio, and Samardzjia look great when they first came up before the wheels came off, but he deserves another shot. Good thing that Lou isnt in charge, because yesterdays perfomrance probably would have earned him a trip to Iowa and been replaced with Berg or some other atrocity.

i'm not saying he doesn't have promise, i'm saying that his results as a major league pitcher have been lousy. he has decent peripherals, but his home run rate and line drive rate (27%!) are alarming and suggest that when he misses within the strike zone, he misses in a way such that his pitches get creamed. i'd rather have him in there than some guy like berg who clearly doesn't have major league stuff, but mateo has some work to do before he's considered solid. and if russell is going to face RH batters more than half the time, he can't be considered solid either.
