why does mike lupica get to be a shameless homer while the columnists in chicago have to be such pricks towards the bears and all of the rest?

i remember that i developed a healthy hatred for the guy during the jordan years when he was so vocally anti-bulls and pro-knicks. but he just said that he thinks that mark sanchez will become one of the great quarterbacks. excuse me? what a joke, he knows nothing about sports outside of new york, and he's blindly irrational about sports within new york.

You mean that 75.3 QB rating (27th in the league and worse than guys like Chad Henne, Alex Smith and Shaun Hill), or the 54.8 completion percentage (29th and better than only Derek Anderson and Jimmy Clausen) don't scream GOAT to you?

That would make about as much sense as declaring a 2nd year early-entry QB a bust when he's 3-1 in the playoffs (all road games) and improved quite a bit from year 1 to 2. Doesn't really stop anyone either.

So he improved from horrible to way below average. That's wonderful. Josh Freeman improved quite a bit, Sanchez showed a marginal improvement.

That's not to say he won't end up being good a few years down the road, but right now he sucks and the Jets win in spite of him, not because of him.

The one flirting with bust status from that QB class is Stafford.

Sanchez and Freeman are very clearly on schedule in their development. Freeman had a great year. Saying Sanchez is a "horrible" QB is way overcooking it. It's just asinine to suggest that going from 17 college starts to immediately starting and winning games in the pros while improving qualifies him for bust status.

Ugh Charles. That's why he doesn't get more burn, because the Chiefs try to avoid turnovers almost more than they try to score points.

? he only fumbled three times all year, same as Jones

I never said he is a bust or is going to be a bust.

I just said that right now, he's a bad quarterback and he doesn't deserve all the ridiculous praise that is being heaped upon him. He could turn into Peyton Manning in five years but that wouldn't change the fact that his 2009 and 2010 seasons were two of the worst in the league each year.

Well I think there's some causation there with fatigue, picking Jones for certain carries, etc, and Charles has a much worse history with ball security than Jones.

I don't read the NY papers but I don't really agree that the default position on Sanchez is that he's a recipient of "all the ridiculous praise." At least on the internet and message boards, where I keep up with football, it seems like most just incessantly talk about how he sucks, is verging on bust-status, etc.

The guys that come in and kick ass right away that start as rookies are rare. Even Manning took a full year before he started tearing it up and he had a [expletive] load of college starts under his belt.

mostly because Jones is elite in that respect, but Charles is well more than adequate in ball security

Fair enough. I completely agree that it's way too early to call Sanchez a bust. I mean, he hasn't played well, but it's not like he's been JaMarcus Russell or anything. And I don't think he'll end up being a bust either. My bet is that he turns into a decent, middle of the road QB.

Chiefs need to start finishing drives with points.

This is exactly the kind of game the Ravens are comfortable playing, and winning.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Do all football TV crews have that play on speed dial or something?

Interestingly, there's the 2nd player I've seen awarded the ball back on the tuck rule -- both from the Belichek family of players.

Steelers-Ravens should be a good one next week.

Nervous as [expletive].

Me too I'm having images of Vick destroying us back in the day and 4th and 26 (which they had to show) at the same time.
