Phil Cavarretta, who played for the Cubs from 1935 to 1953 (and then turned to the Dark Side and played his last two years with the White Sox), has died at 94. He died of complications from a stroke and was also suffering from leukemia. He was a three-time All-Star and was the NL MVP in 1945. He was also Cubs' manager from 1951 through 1953. He was fired during Spring Training in 1954 for being honest and saying that the Cubs weren't very good.

Hard to believe his number wasn't retired while he was alive. He was a long-tenured player who was the face of the franchise and actually played in the World Series.

He joined the ranks of those of us who found out that people prefer lies to the truth, and lost his job for it.

RIP.
