Carpenter's post All-Star surge is making his numbers look very respectable. He hasn't wowed like Archer and McNutt have this year, but he seems to be having a pretty good season. Has his stock fallen or have other players just jumped ahead of him? If memory serves, he didn't seem to move up in posters' midseason Top 10 lists after players ahead of him were promoted to the bigs. Would his recent success change this for any of you minor league experts?

I have Chris Carpenter behind Archer, McNutt and Jackson primarily because of his injury history. Multiple surgeries and he even missed most of April with shoulder problems.

With a cleaner bill of health, he'd probably still behind Archer and McNutt. His stuff is as good as theirs but he doesn't have their command or consistency.

BA's Best Tools (subscription only) coverage rolls on with Low A. Trey McNutt was named as having the best breaking pitch in the MWL, while Hak-Ju Lee was named best defensive SS in the MWL.

This made me very happy. We all knew Lee is thought of as an elite defensive SS, but I didn't know about McNutt's breaking ball. I heard about his command of a mid-90s fastball and I figured that's enough to dominate at the lower levels. But now that I learn of an elite secondary breaking pitch, he's a lot more likely to perform well in AA, AAA and the bigs.

Thanks for your response.

Is there any chance that he can become more consistent? (Beyond sure anything can happen.) He walks too many, but he does seem to keep the ball in the park.

Staying healthy should help with that. Not taking large chunks of time off every now and then to heal up from something allows players not to have to relearn and retune their delivery. You can become more consistent in being able to repeat your delivery that way. Whether the delivery you are able to repeat produces good enough control to succeed is a matter for the pitcher and his coaches. But staying healthy will definitely help maximize his potential.

Sure - just look at Chris Archer as an example (Rich Hill if you go further back...hopefully Archer doesn't relapse like Hill).

One of his biggest issues is the big inning where his mechanics go crazy, he loses control and ends up throwing too many pitches. Mechanical issues should be fixable and Mark Riggins is one of the best at it in the minors.

Yeah, his power curve is pretty good. He actually got some love for it in the NWL last year which.

Guyer with a couple HR through the early going.

McNutt out after 3 IP, 6 R, 3 ER, 7 H, 2 BB, 6 SO

Wallach with three hitless innings so far, 2 SO, 1 BB.

Not a whole lot worth noting just yet.

my cousin is at the game, says Wallach is throwing hard and he resembles Prior in his mechanics.

6 scoreless, 2 H, 2 BB, 6 K

I like.

I love our young pitching. Cashner, Jackson, Archer, Mcnutt, Carpenter, etc. We can develop some pitching.

Carpenter hit 99 and 98 striking out one of the lookouts

He hit 100 last time out on a strikeout (which means the Cubs have had 3 prospects hit 100 in the last calendar year in Carpenter, Cashner and Dolis).

And they'll probably all end up in the bullpen...
