Cubs finally to Fenway, Yankees back to Wrigley in 2011?

That's apparently what they are saying.....14 years into interleague play and finally the Cubs are going to play a series at Fenway.

(This is an old article from 7/9 so apologies if it's been discussed):

The Sox are scheduled to play teams from all three National League divisions in interleague play. The Chicago Cubs are scheduled to visit May 20-22, Milwaukee is in June 17-19, followed by San Diego June 20-22.

Also, according to today's Trib, the Yankees are planning to revisit Wrigley for the first time since 2003:

In 2003 the Yankees made their first trip to Wrigley Field in over 60 years, and it was one of the most anticipated series of what turned out to be an exciting summer for the Cubs. The 2011 schedule has not been released, but we have learned that the interleague portion has the Yankees playing at Wrigley Field in a three game series.

Have no idea why parts of the 2011 schedule are being released in July/August, but I guess that's all we have left to look forward to now.

About damn time.

$10 says the Cardinals end up drawing one of the Red Sox or Yankees at most and end up with Toronto and Baltimore otherwise.

I remember when the Red Sox visited Wrigley in 2005. Maddux hit a HR in one of those games.

That was the series that turned me against the Red Sox. The fanbases were all friendly to each other at the start of the series, Cub fans congratulating the Red Sox fans for finally breaking their curse, and Red Sox fans wishing the Cub fans break their own curse as well. However, by the end of the series, I found the Red Sox fans to be completely annoying.

the cubs have never played a regular season game in oakland. going to boston just eliminates one stadium, i would have thought for sure we would have played in oakland this season.

Have we played a preseason or playoff game in Oakland?

That would rule and suck. I'd love to see the Cubs go up against the Yankees (and hopefully beat the [expletive] out of them), but the Red Sox are my second favorite team so I'd hate to see them face the Cubs.

There's no reason why the didn't. The Cubs played at Texas in 2007 and played at Texas again this year. Should have just hosted Texas and played Oakland on the road.

Couple things I noticed while looking up interleague stuff:

The Cubs haven't played the Royals since 2001. The next longest stretch is New York and Boston, who they played in 2005 and appear to be playing again next year.

Also, the first team the Cubs ever faced during interleague play was, interestingly enough, the Milwaukee Brewers as 1997 was the last year the Brewers were in the AL.

2nd favorite team?

the red sox?

My dad got me into the Cubs, music got me into Boston (The city's got an amazing hardcore scene).

i root for the Jazz cuz i like saxophones

the Blues too!

I live on the other side of the [expletive] world, there aren't a lot of ways I can come into contact with baseball teams. I saw all these musicians with Boston-caps on, and decided to check that team out. I got to like that team. This was at a time when I was just getting into baseball. Get off my [expletive] back.

Are there any team matchups that have yet to happen in interleague at a certain park? I know Cubs at Fenway and Cubs at Oakland are two of them.

After a little internet digging, there seem to be 17 city specific interleague matchups that have no occured yet. Strangely enough Cubs @ Red Sox may not even be the most compelling matchup that hasn't occured yet. The Dodgers still have not visited the Bronx and taken on the Yankees since whenever their last WS against each other was (1981 i believe), despite the Yanks having 2 series over the years in LA.

Here are all 17 matchups that supposedly haven't been played as of the end of the 2010 season:

1. Cincinnati @ Baltimore. (WS rematch)

2. St. Louis @ Baltimore.

3. Chicago Cubs @ Boston. (WS rematch)

4. Atlanta @ Kansas City.

5. St. Louis @ LA Angels.

6. LA Dodgers @ NY Yankees. (WS rematch)

7. Milwaukee @ NY Yankees.

8. Chicago Cubs @ Oakland. (sort of WS rematch, but it was Phila A's)

9. Milwaukee @ Seattle. (How have they not had a Pilots vs. Mariners matchup yet?)

10. Houston @ Toronto.

11. San Diego @ Toronto.

12. Minnesota @ Atlanta. (WS rematch)

13. Tampa Bay @ LA Dodgers.

14. Oakland @ Milwaukee.

15. Tampa Bay @ Milwaukee.

16. Chicago White Sox @ NY Mets.

17. Texas @ St. Louis.
