raley is supposed to be pretty polished with a ceiling of a #3/4, but he doesn't really have plus pitches. he got drilled in the first inning tonight (5 hits, 6 runs (3 earned), 1 bb, 2 k).

some people said during the offseason that castro doesn't have plus speed, so i'd like to know how that can be true when he has 4 triples already.

Starlin 2/3. Triple and single I believe.

He added a double for funsies. He has at least 2 hits in 9 of his last 10 games.

tennessee is absolutely wailing on carolina - it's 16-5 in the 6th inning.

guyer - 2-3 (double, single), 3 runs, 2 rbi, 1 bb, 1 hbp

castro - 3-4 (triple, double, single), 3 runs, 3 rbi, 1 hbp

ty wright - 3-4 (single, 2 homers), 2 runs, 7 rbi, 1 bb

chirinos - 1-2 (homer), 2 runs, 2 rbi, 2 bb

At this point, Starlin Castro probably is one of the top 10 prospects in baseball.

Hes hitting .426 with a 1.159 OPS. Hes got to be.

His night is over though, as Optiz has been put in for him. I hoe nothings wrong, or he hasnt been traded for a mediocre reliever. I know the Smokes are up 16-5, and they might want to giv him the rest of the night off, but hes a homer away from the cycle, and dont managers like to give guys the oportinity to finish the job?

Really? Under 100 ABs of domination elevates him to that level? I do love how he has responded to the prospect hype, but every player goes through highs and lows throughout a full season.

Experts, how excited should I be for Brooks Raley?

So-so. He was a two-way player in college and had some decent stuff as a LHP, so there were some thoughts that he'd sharpen his command and improve his stuff by becoming a full-time pitcher. He's been decidedly inconsistent since the transition, but there's some hope he could be a middle of the rotation type of pitcher. His ceiling is halfway decent.

Tonight...well, yeah, not good.

at this point we have five (castro, cashner, the jacksons, vitter), maybe six (hak-ju lee) prospects who shouldn't be dealt unless we get a very good player in return.

he hit really well all of last year, including a very strong showing as the second-youngest player in the arizona fall league. he has to still be one of the youngest hitters in the southern league and continues to rake. the three editors of the BA prospect handbook ranked him at 13, 16 and 29th best prospect in baseball, and obviously he's not moving down anyone's list at this stage. by midseason i'd expect some of the guys ahead of him to not be rookies any more (heyward, matusz, escobar, neftali feliz, maybe guys like strasburg, carlos santana, pedro alvarez) so assuming he continues to play very well, he'd almost certainly have to be considered a top 10 prospect.

Both SSs Lee and Castro were removed from their games today. Awaiting word as to why...

Oh, and Beliveau needs to be promoted. He already had 96.2 IP at Peoria last season and did well. He's 23 and including tonight's game, he's pitched 9.1 innings, allowed 5 hits, 2 earned, 5 walks and struckout 20. I think that's good enough, don't you?

I guess we will see how he performs in the long haul. He can hold his own with the bat for a SS. Can he play D? Hopefully he isn't Ronny Cedeno with the glove - lots of promise and no consistency. I won't read too* much into his error totals as some of those fields look like the surface of the moon.

Graduating to the Top 10 via absence of elite prospects speaks more to the nitpicking of what defines a "prospect" vs comparing Castro to his peers (service time)- to which we will ultimately be evaluating his performance..
