Having just followed much of this evening's Cards-'Stros contest, I have the following (obvious) observation: Houston is unbearably awful.

Team stats: .223/.245/.294/.539 (prior to tonight's game. Those numbers are even lower now).

They are giving starts to J.R. Towles, presently sporting a .167 OPS.

Their best hitter is Michael Bourne.

They have scored 0 earned runs in their past three games.

Albert Pujols has more RBI in 2010 than their team.

Their 3 hitter tonight was Pedro Feliz.

I won't even get into the pitching.

This is the most insufferably feckless team I can recall watching (note: I have wiped 1997 from my mind. Not just the Cubs, the entire year). Khalid Sheikh Mohammed should be forced to experience all of the Astros remaining games with his eyelids peeled back à la "Clockwork Orange".

Here's hoping we can take 2 out of 3 from them.

Wandy will start pitching better, assuming he's healthy. And Berkman will come off the DL. But it seems the Astros might be even worse than expected. I figured ~75 wins and 5th place, but I'm not sure they're capable of winning enough to avoid finishing in last place. In spite of having a pretty high payroll.

I don't see them as one of those ALL-TIME bad teams. They'll get Berkman back and Pence will begin hitting soon enough. They're pitching won't be awful, not good either though. I could see them lose 90+ games, but I can't see them lose 100. Now, with this start to the season, players could be giving up already, which would help them approach the century mark.

oh well at least their minor league system and general manager are good. wait never mind, BA rated their farm as the worst in baseball, and ed wade is a moron.

that team desperately needs to sell off their useful parts for prospects and rebuild; the should have done this last season. maybe this year they'll be so far out of it by the deadline that wade gets the hint.

One of the sports radio talking heads here in St. Louis pointed out the Astros had 14 runs so far and Albert Pujols alone has 15 RBIs.

Yup, was pointed out by the OP. Sad sad statistic.

Reminds me of the year we started 0-14 or whatever. They're historically bad. That's quite a feeling, to have your season effectively be over in April.

Practically speaking, Houston's season was over before it began. In the sense that they had no shot at making the postseason. That, of course, was true for at least 1/3rd of MLB teams coming into this season. Most, though, don't have a payroll of $90+ million like the Astros do.

Astros well on their way to victory behind a stellar outing from Bud Norris.

why is mitchell boggs still on the cards' roster? he's terrible.

Boggs's control sucks, but he's not useless. At the very least, he can fill the mopup role (the Brad Thompson role). LaRussa will eventually stop using Boggs in close contests.
