my friend and i came up with the following:

C: Jorge Posada

1B: Albert Pujols

2B: Jeff Kent

SS: Derek Jeter

3B: Alex Rodridguez

OF: Barry Bonds

OF: Manny Ramirez

OF: Vladimir Guerrero

SP: Pedro Martinez

RP: Mariano Rivera

i had some trouble with Vlad... Edmonds had a pretty nice decade.

any obvious omissions? this list is offensively biased, but we did consider defense as best as we could. the number of games played weighed pretty heavily as well (mauer vs posada, kent vs utley).

If you are going to do something like this you should separate LF, CF and RF.

Ichiro might be worth a look in the OF somewhere, Halladay or Johan Santana should get consideration for SP. I also might be tempted to cheat and put A-Rod at short and Chipper Jones at 3rd.

EDIT: Or Randy Johnson at SP. Pedro would be an easy choice for pitcher of the first half of the decade, but has really fallen off the last 5 years.

LF: Bonds

we went back and forth between Santana, Johnson, and Pedro. Pedro's ERA+ is 17 points higher than Johnson's, and 9 points higher than Santana's. in terms of IP, Johnson pitched around 2 more seasons, and Santana pitched just over a full season compared to Pedro. Johnson has also had a similar decline over the last 5 seasons.

Going by WAR, Carlos Beltran was the top CF of the decade (Edmonds 2nd), Ichiro the top RF (Manny/Vlad tossup for 2nd), and Halladay the top SP (Randy Johnson 2nd).

Manny doesn't play RF and hasn't played it much at all compared to LF this decade (991-100). Manny only played RF regularly in 2000 and his only other year with any games at RF is 2001 with 7.

In that case, Ichiro is still the top RF of the decade by WAR.
