...and why is Lou so convinced that Castro doesn't deserve a real shot as well. My only reason for not considering it is if they think it will be detrimental mentality if he struggles at first. Castro gives us better defense and speed than Fonty and quite possibly a livelier bat.

I wouldn't go as far as to say Castro would have better defense than Fontenot immediately and Castro's speed isn't the greatest. Considering his prior experience at the upper levels, he needs to start in the minors, but be a possible promotion candidate come June if he's doing really well.

With Castro there would be better defense at SS and I would think Theriot is pretty much equal to Fontenot at 2B. I don't see how Castro breaks camp on the 25-man without injuries. If the Fonenot/Baker platoon is scuffling then I could see a call up in mid May or early June. I don't have much faith in Fontenot to even be a average part of a platoon and think at best he is a 24/25 type player on a roster who starts maybe once a week.

Castro made 39 errors last year in 119 games. He will probably be a very good defender, but he is by no means a sure thing to be an improvement over Theriot.

Silva gets through 2 scoreless

[expletive] I have never rooted for a Cubs player to fail, but I want Silva to fail so badly just so he doesn't even get near the starting rotation.

That is true, but we all know how many errors Lee can save at 1B. I have asked this before on here, and never received an answer, what is the breakdown of fielding/throwing errors for Castro last year?

Yeah, thats a good possibility, and I don't know if that breakdown is readily available without going through box scores. I just don't see a good enough of a chance of Castro performing better than the status quo right off the bat to risk stunting his development or starting his arb clock.

Fuld robbed a homer at the wall, apparently. Silva's day is done

I really hope Castro starts one of the two televised games this weekend, I have yet to see him in live action! Would not mind a glimpse of Brett Jackson either!

Hoffpauir's having an awful spring

Just turned the big 30, his joints are starting to creak

I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that hes very unlikely to make the team. Seriously. With all the competiton, youd think it would make him step up his game, but between Nady, Fontenot, and Hill pretty much having 3 of the 5 bench spots locked down, theres only 2 left, and Chad Tracy has the inside track on another. Hoff may have some power in the bat, but all and all, Blanco, Colvin and Fuld are probably more valuable than him due to their defense. Thats got to get in your head, when you finally make the big show after all that time in the minors, and then they startlining up replacements for you.

What are CHONE projections based on? They have Castro projected at 5.9 runs below average defensively in 2010.

Also, spring training results still don't mean anything, and I don't think his minor-league production to date projects to major-league adequacy offensively.
