There's absolutely nothing wrong with having a contrary opinion and making a case for it. I love it and it's pretty much the basis for discussion on a message board. But your opinions (unless I'm forgetting something) ALWAYS run contrary to the consensus. And your arguments have a tendency of either picking on a side point or being a (seemingly deliberate) misinterpretation of what someone is saying. Hence, I believe I led the charge in labeling them as obtuse.

2 a : lacking sharpness or quickness of sensibility or intellect : insensitive, stupid b : difficult to comprehend : not clear or precise in thought or expression

 

Looking at the definition, I don't believe it is the correct word. Your arguments are typically clear and precise. They are also typically either beside the point being made or misinterpret someone else's argument in seemingly deliberate ways.

Saying someone is being willfully obtuse is not the same as saying they are obtuse. In fact, to consistently adapt to every argument to find the most contrary position indicates that you are not obtuse.

I'll cop to contrarian. IMO this board needs a devil's advocate to keep the vocal know-it-all faction in check. I'm happy to provide that service for the good of the community. :D)

 

As you suggest, the term obtuse is consistently being misapplied, and it's obvious (to me anyway) that the important distinction you illustrate is completely lost on most of the folks using it.

What I did today was make a joke that extended what someone else was saying about your arguments. It would be...dense...not to understand that.

You're smart, but your entire process for deciding what to argue is "what is the opposite of what everybody else is thinking?" But you need to learn to pick your battles, because nitpicking in a thread like this is really beginning to cloud the occasional good point you do make.

 

Now to this point I've read and responded your arguments as I recognize that I do need to be kept in line a bit. But if I can't call a nice little trade a very slick move without having to spend 5 minutes defending myself, I don't see you lasting long before starting to hit some ignore lists.
