Is Cotts expected to be ready by the start of the season after having TJS? Or will it be sometime during the season? Not that I want to see him anywhere near the 25-man roster, but if he's healthy I would think he will be in contention for a bullpen spot.

He didn't have the surgery until early July, so I don't think he'd be expected to be back close to the beginning of the season. Maybe around the All-Star break.

From Dayn Perry's latest article. 10 things that need to happen this offseason. He really did his homework.

8. The Cubs should sign Mark DeRosa.

This one's easy. The Cubs have a sinkhole at second base, and DeRosa is still effective and still beloved on the North Side of Chicago. He's a solid defender at the keystone, and his right-handed pop should play well in Wrigley. And that's to say nothing of his positional flexibility. On another level, the Cubs' failure to resign DeRosa last winter angered many fans, especially once the team began circling the drain. The Ricketts family could, in one move, fill a hole and distinguish itself from the Tribune era

So re-signing a player from the Tribune era would distinguish them from the Tribune era.

He should teach logic.

Yeah, that doesnt make a lot of sense. Either way, we dont have a "sink hole" at second anyway. If we couldnt get ahold of Granderson or Cameron, I might be interested in DeRosa in right if he came cheap enough.

Really shows an extensive knowledge of our minor league system when all he points to is a "failure to re-sign" Mark Derosa

failure to re-sign... traded... what's the big difference?

Posted

Just depends on how expensive DeRosa would be.

It is pretty strange that Dayn would think that re-signing a Tribune-era player would distinguish the Ricketts from the Trib. I would think it would do the exact opposite. Actually, I'm fairly certain it would do the exact opposite.

It would do neither.

True. Dumb statement. But it was a classic Tribune era move. 3 years $13 million for a not so big time free agent. It was one of the few Tribune era free agency moves that actually worked. Todd Hundley was how these moves usually turned out.

found this on Olney's blog the other day

P Danny Rodriguez of the Tomateros de Culiacan is expected to sign with the Chicago Cubs soon. Rodriguez is 3-0 with a 1.25 ERA for Culiacan this season.

Didn't see this anywhere. It's from Kaplan.

I have learned that the Cubs have informed Harden and Gregg as well as outfielder Reed Johnson that they will not be offered salary arbitration meaning that if those players sign with another club the Cubs will get no draft pick compensation.

It's official. No arbitration for Harden. No draft pick compensation.

Gotta love Jim Hendry. He has to save up for his downgrade for his outfield downgrade. Is resigning Harden and Johnson and having Johnson and either Fuld or Colvin platoon in center really that much worse than ending up with Marlon Byrd?

i am very happy with these decisions personally

i don't think harden is worth it, and i think my opinion will be shown for truth in the upcoming season

Harden's place among active pitchers (career stats):

* 3.39 Lifetime ERA (behind only Pedro, Santana, Oswalt, Peavy, Webb, Unit & Smoltz among active starters)

* 9.4 K/9IP (behind only Unit, Wood & Pedro among active starters)

* .633 win % (behind only Pedro, Santana, Oswalt, Halladay, Hudson, Unit & Cliff Lee among active starters)

* 1.237 WHIP (14th among active starters)

It has to be considered though that Harden was dominant with a very different arsenal of pitches that he now has. He turned from a 4 pitch pitcher to a 2 pitch pitcher because of the injuries. While the differing actions of the changeup means that he's not quite that limited, it's still hard to say how much that has affected his career. He's far from a lock right now at being one of the best pitchers in baseball even if he's healthy.

I agree with your take. Unless the Cubs know something we don't failing to offer Harden arbitration is inexcusable (especially with Lilly up in the air). Even if he accepted arbitration, got a big salary, and had a mediocre or worse season, it's still only for one year.

Phew, I was getting sucked in again with the Minor League hype. And then I read this thread. That's better.

I'm thinking of not re-upping EI this season and saving the bucks.

Yeah, I'm going to forego the EI subscription this year, in anticipation of a relatively frustrating year as a Cub fan.
