when i close my eyes and dream about what i want the cubs offense to be, i see the phillies lineup.

8/9 runs coming on homerun balls. If the Jaramillo haters are correct, you'll get your wish.

the phillies (and yankees actually) are both a big [expletive] you to all the people who say you need to play small ball to win in the playoffs. actually most teams that have won are the exception to that dumb-ass rule.

The third straight year a team sweeps the NL Central champion out of the first round and then gets destroyed in the NLCS. Shows something about our NL Central maybe.

What happened the year before that? Some juggernaut won it all right?

Maybe this shows something about playoff baseball.

I really wanted to see Torre and Manny return to the Bronx, but a Philly/NY matchup is plenty epic enough.

Assuming the Yankees win, it would be the first time the Phils faced an old-line club in the Series since 1950 (also the Yankees.) Every matchup since has featured recently relocated or expansion franchises (Kansas City in 1980, Baltimore in 1983, Toronto in 1993 and Tampa Bay in 2008.)

I think the Phils have the offense to give the Yankees (or Angels--not likely) fits. The Yanks may have the edge in starting pitching, but there isn't a pitcher in baseball who wants to face that offense.

Edit: You could make the argument that the Orioles are an old-line club, too. They're an original American League franchise. They were in Milwaukee as the Brewers in 1901, then St. Louis from 1902-1952 and then moved to Baltimore in 1953. Yes, they've relocated, but I consider them an original AL franchise, just like the Twins.

No dude it was Eckstein and pixie dust

Edit: or maybe the division's quality has gotten worse over the last 4 years.

The division's gotten worse since an 83 win team won it?

Or maybe that was the exception to the rule not the 3 years following it.
