Good to see I have someone in my corner on the add Dolis to the 40-man bandwagon. Mid-90s fastball, potential plus slider, improving change and he's already at high-A. I'd protect him over someone like Papelbon.

Arizona Phil at The Cub Reporter"]Pitching in front of a number of scouts from rival clubs and several members of the Cubs front office and player development staff, Dolis and Raley threw six innings of eye-poppin', bat-breakin', gun-totin', Texas Hold 'em, Dominicana country hardball.

The 6'4 230+ Dolis never looked better, allowing just a broken bat single to the first man he faced (who was promptly erased on a "room service" 6-4-3 DP), and then retiring everybody else he faced, finishing with a two-strikeout flourish in the top of the 3rd, where he appeared to really gun the velocity up a notch.

Dolis showed outstanding command today, throwing 38 pitches (29 strikes) in his three innings of work. If the Cubs don't add Dolis to their 40-man roster by the November 20th deadline, he will be eligible for this December's Rule 5 Draft, and if he is eligible, he will be selected by somebody.

To get a 21-year old pitcher with a mid-90's fastball and improved command of his breaking ball and change-up for the $50,000 Rule 5 Draft price should prove irresistable for the Washington Nationals, San Diego Padres, and/or Pittsburgh Pirates of the world. Showing the velocity, command & control he did today in front of scouts from other organizations is all he needed to do to suddenly become a hot commodity on the scouting circuit.

Now, I'm not saying the Cubs will add Dolis to their 40-man roster, just that they should, (or that they would be foolish not to do it).

Here is today's abridged box score (Cubs players only):

LINEUP:

1. Logan Watkins, 2B: 2-4 (6-3, 1B, K, BB, 1B), 2 R

2a. Ryan Flaherty, DH #1: 0-3 (K, 3-U, 4-6 FC, BB), R, RBI

2b. Justin Bour, PH: 0-1 (6-3)

4. Brandon Guyer, CF: 2-4 (5-3, BB, 1B, 2B, F-8), 2 R, RBI

5. Kyler Burke, RF: 1-3 (1-3, BB, BB, K, 1B), 2 R, RBI

7. D. J. LeMahieu, SS: 2-3 (BB, 1B, 1B, 1-3), 2 RBI

8. Matt Cerda, 3B: 1-4 (1B, 6-3, 4-6 FC, F-8), R, 2 RBI

2. Logan Watkins (E-4) - With runners at 1st and 2nd and two outs in the top of the 7th, bobbled ground ball that would have been the inning-ending out, and all three runs scored (all unearned runs) when the next batter cleared the bases with a bases-loaded triple.

Thanks. What paper was that?

I disagree on Kyler Burke having bad range. And like Tim, I don't see the Flaherty-Theriot comps.

Flaherty-Theriot might be one of the weirdest things I've seen in awhile.

As for Dolis, if he really is that much sharper on his secondary pitches, then he is definitely worth protecting over Papelbon. The only reason I suggested that we protected Papelbon earlier in the year was in an effort to potentially save money, but if the Cubs are going to keep Grabow, then Gaub would be the 3rd or 4th lefty anyways (Grabow/Marshall/Gorzelanny - one of the latter two could be the 5th starter) which makes any purpose to keep Papelbon minimal, particularly considering I find it unlikely that both Papelbon/Ruhlman get picked, so we'd have a passable guy in AAA still.

I think Castillo/Gaub/Parker all need to be protected, with the latter two potentially fitting in pen roles in 2010 or 2011, and with Castillo ready to potentially challenge if Soto struggles in 2010 (assuming Castillo develops and shows more consistency).

Arizona Phil at The Cub Reporter"]Justin Bour walked, doubled, and crushed a two-run HR, Matt Cerda tripled twice and scored three runs, and Chris Rusin threw three innings of perfect baseball, but it wasn't enough, as the Angels edged the Cubs 6-5 in AZ Instructional League action at Fitch Park Field #3 in Mesa this afternoon.

At 6'4 250+, Bour is a big dude who looks like he should have some power, but he hit only four HR in 62 games and 269 PA (combined) at Mesa and Boise in 2009. But Bour has been working with Peoria hitting instructor Barbaro Garbey in the cages each morning before the games and his new-found power really showed up today! (BTW, Justin Bour's older brother Jason is a catcher in the Reds organization, and Jason was ex-Cubs #1 draft pick Mark Pawelek's catcher at Sarasota in 2009).

Arizona Phil at The Cub Reporter"]Logan Watkins reached base four times (three singles and a HBP), scored twice, and drove-in a run, and D. J. LeMahieu blasted a two-run double and a solo HR, but a 9th inning Cub rally fell short as the potential tying run was thrown out at the plate, giving the A's a 10-9 decision over the Cubs in AZ Instructional League action at the Papago Baseball Complex in Phoenix this afternoon.

19-year old LHP Austin Kirk (Cubs 2009 3rd round draft pick out of Owasso HS - Owasso, OK) got the start today and worked three shutout innings. He escaped trouble in the bottom of the second when he walked the first two hitters, before getting out of the jam with a 6-4 FC grounder, and a 6-4-3 DP. Kirk retired the last six men he faced.

10/17 - AZ Instructs Finale:

Arizona Phil at The Cub Reporter"]20-year old RHP Trey McNutt (Cubs 2009 32nd round pick out of Shelton State CC, who got over-slot money to sign) got the start for the Cubs today, and threw three shutout innings. He did allow five hits (four singles and a double) in those three innings, but he didn't issue any walks, and he picked a runner off 2nd base to get out of one jam, and benefiited from a baserunning gaffe by the Angels to get out of another.

RHP Thomas Diamond followed McNutt to the hill, and had his best outing since being acquired from Texas off waivers last month, throwing three innings of one-hit shutout ball, while striking out five in a row at one point. The 26-year old Diamond (the Rangers 1st round draft pick in 2004 out of the University of New Orleans, who underwent TJS in 2007) was absolutely dominating today, throwing hard and pitching with a lot of confidence.

...

Several of the Cubs who attended Instructs at Fitch Park will be playing Winter Ball in Venezuela, Puerto Rico, or the Dominican Republic, and eight more will be en route from Phoenix to the Cubs Dominican Academy in Boca Chica for six weeks of Dominican Instructional League, where the American kids will get a chance to see how their Latin brothers live and play ball at Baseball City.

Last year, Matt Cerda, Brandon Guyer, Nate Samson, and Josh Vitters spent a month at the Cubs Dominican Academy after attending AZ Instructs, and it worked so well that Player Development Director Oneri Fleita decided to expand it and send even more U. S. kids down there this year. (The Dominican Instructional League runs through November).

In a story about Kyler Burke, Carrie Muskat mentioned the 8 Cubs who will be headed to the Dominican Academy till November 21:

Carrie Muskat"]The Dominican trip is a reward for his success. Burke will be joined at the Cubs' academy in Boca Chica by Rebel Ridling, Ryan Flaherty, DJ LeMahieu, Logan Watkins, Brett Jackson, Matt Cerda and Sergio Burruel. The goal for the monthlong junket is to play baseball, watch some Winter League games and get a better understanding of the Dominican Republic, where many of their teammates are from.
