It's not fair to put the weight of Chicago sports mediocrity on the Hawks shoulders, they already have that NHL best Stanley Cup drought to worry about, but complete breakdowns like this remind me that the Hawks are a Chicago sports team.

 

It's gonna be a game that is no big deal in the long run, but annoying none the less, and one that shows the Hawks aren't without their imperfections.

I think Q isn't going to stand for too many games like this. If Huet keeps playing like this I don't think you have to worry about Huet in the playoffs.

I think they can make a run with Huet. Yeah he sucks most of the time but the Hawks usually play keep away and put the puck in the net pretty well. While it's tough to do this against the best teams, they've been doing this all year. I don't see why they couldn't do it in the playoffs.

 

I would love to see what Niemi could do as the regular starter though.

i have no idea. nieme has been great this season, but i'm in the same boat as kujay. i don't think we've seen nearly enough of him to make a judgement.

 

i do think i'd start giving niemi a few more starts and see if he plays well enough to warrant taking more starts away from huet. if you do that and he starts to struggle, limit him a bit more.

huet's not the type of goalie that typically does well in postseason hockey. he gives up wayyyy too many rebounds and doesnt respond well at all to traffic in front of the net. like people were talking about in this thread early tonight, how many times have we heard pat foley say huet never saw it" this season?

I really think the goalie situation is the only thing that may keep the Cup away from the Hawks. On any given night Huet could have a day like tonight, and in the playoffs that is not going to cut it.

 

I would like to see Niemi get more starts down the road here to see what kind of pressure he can handle. I still think the Hawks can with with Huet if the defense plays well, but the offense isn't going to score 6 goals a game in the playoffs to help him. Call me skeptical with Huet.

Agreed. I def want to see what Niemi can do full time. His numbers so far have been really impressive. I believe Q knows this and is keeping Niemi fresh by playing Huet a lot until later in the season LOL

Plus it's been proven that you don't necessarily have to have a shutdown goalie to win the Cup. It's like football and QBs, you can win the Super Bowl with a mediocre QB, but you have to have everything else in place, defense, special teams, running game.
