Some Boise injuries by way of their PBP guy, Mike Safford:

Outfielder Jose Valdez has been out of the line-up for nearly a week after injuring his hand sliding into second base during the Everett series...he did take infield-outfield practice yesterday...Josh Lansford was knocked out of yesterday's game by a line-drive in the eighth inning, which struck his left foot...he is day-to-day.

Valdez returned to Boise's lineup last night.

Valdez makes me think of a comment someone made recently about how the Cubs system lacked guys with speed. Sure, we don't have a ton of guys with elite speed (what system does ... ) but we have enough speed in the system, with a few top end guys. Of course, whether or not that speed can translate into a useful asset is a question, but speed we have.

Bruce is at the Peoria game tonight, so he will be giving updates on Z on his blog. He also said he interviewed Jackson, LeMahieu, Brenly, and Huesby before the game.

This would be such a wonderful game to go to..not only to see all the hitters (of course including Burke and Flaherty in addition to the names he said) but to get to see Z and Archer as well? That's pretty nice.

Big Z's first inning:

Kyle Seager grounds out, shortstop DJ LeMahieu to first baseman Rebel Ridling.

Luis Nunez flies out to right fielder Kyler Burke.

Ian Bladergroen grounds out, second baseman Ryan Flaherty to first baseman Rebel Ridling.

1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, 2-1 GO-FO.

He's expected to go 5 innings or 70-75 pitches, whichever comes first.

What Bruce has to say:

Bruce Miles"]Z fell behind each batter 1-0 but worked a 1-2-3 first. Clinton's Kyle Seager grounded out to LeMahieu at short on a 2-2 pitch. Luis Nunez flied to Burke in right on 3-1. Ian Bladergroen grounded out to Flaherty at second on a 1-2 pitch.

14 pitches, 8 strikes.

Big Z: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, 3-1 GO-FO.

Bruce Miles"]Z strikes out Scott Savastano on three pitches, the last of which looked to be a nice breaking pitch over the outside corner for a caught looking. Nate Tenbrink grounded between the first and second basemen. Flaherty grabbed it, and Z got over to first for the 4-1 play. Jake Shaffer grounded a single up the middle before Z struck out Denny Almonte on a high fastball out of the zone.

13 pitches, 10 strikes

Total: 27/18

Big Z: 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K, 3-2 GO-FO.

Bruce Miles"]Top 3: Z works, but no runs

Travis Howell lined a single to right on a 1-1 pitch. Daniel Carroll popped out to short. Seager doubled off the wall in deep right-center. Jackson played it perfectly on one hop off the the wall and threw it where it was supposed to be thrown, holding the other runner at third. Z struck out Nunez and Bladergroen to end it.

19 pitches, 15 strikes

Total: 46/33

Sorry guys, look like I screwed up on the AZL starters. Brooks Raley started and Larry Suarez has followed him.

I'd imagine Rhee and Kirk will go tomorrow.

Raley struggled in his 1.1 innings.

Brandon May is making his pro debut, he's batting 7th for Mesa and DHing.

BA seemed high on him as a second day guy during the draft. I'm curious to see if he has a future or is just roster filler.

Bruce:

Easy Top 4

Savastano flied to right. Tenbrink flied to center on the first pitch. Shaffer yanked one foul out of the park to right before flying out to left.

9 pitches, 9 strikes

Total: 55/42

Top 5: Nearing the limit

Z got Amonte and Howell on groundouts before Carroll singled to right and stole second base. Seager struck out on a dropped third to end the inning.

21 pitches, 12 strikes

Total: 76/54

Archer in for Z

Z: 5 innings, 4 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 5 strikeouts, 1 wild pitch. 76 pitches/54 strikes.

What a nice night here in Peoria, despite the rain. I need to do this more often. It's a lot of fun seeing the kids and visiting with them.

Thanks for the live blogging and thanks for answering my question.

It sure sounds like more fun than going to an actual Cubs game. ](*,)

To me, he seems like a future roster filler. He was a solid role player at Bama, but nothing stood out tools wise.

meh, he gave up a single and home run. not a big deal.

suarez was terrible as usual. what a waste. kirk followed him and gave up 2 singles and 2 walks in 2 innings, but K'ed 1 and gave up no runs.

tennessee suffered an epic 6-run meltdown after going into the 9th inning up 6-2. i think they were tied for the division lead going into tonight, so that's a really bad loss. schlitter is the minor league version of kevin gregg.

hak-ju lee is a pretty fun prospect to watch. he went 3-5 with 2 doubles tonight; it seems like he has a little pop for a guy who is real skinny and only 18 years old. he's shown good skill in SB (22 for 27) and he's in the top 10 in the league in BA and top 15 in OBP. i think i remember reading that he made 11 errors in his first 19 games or so, but since then only has 7 errors and shows great range and an excellent arm. that he's performing so well at age 18 in advanced short-season ball is a good sign.
