I don't ESPN Insider but I see the headline suggesting this may happen.

Cardinals and Dodgers are said to be the most interested, though both are waiting until he clears

I thought he already did clear. No?

they DFA'd him, but if someone claims him in X amount of time, they're on the hook for the remaining salary

Yeah, he cleared waivers. At this point, he'll either be traded or released. I guess the big source of concern is his 35k a day roster bonus for being on the active roster. The ESPN article said the Cards and Rangers are interested.

All roster bonuses are voided if he is traded or released.

Hmm. Ken Rosenthal seems to suggest that the bonuses are the main issue, unless he's released.

Smoltz, 42, receives about $35,000 for each day he is on the active roster and other appearance-based bonuses. He also receives a $500,000 bonus if he is on the active roster and not the disabled list on the last day of the season and a $500,000 bonus if he is traded.

If Boston releases Smoltz, the Red Sox will be obligated to pay the remainder of his one-year, $5.5 million contract he signed in the offseason. If Smoltz signs with another team, Boston would receive an off-set of the pro-rated minimum salary. Under that scenario, Smoltz's new team would not have to pay him any bonus money, as the bonuses are negated once a player is released

I also saw an article, (from a Texas paper, IIRC) which seem to suggest the Rangers would need financial relief from the bonuses if Smoltz was indeed traded to the Texas.

I hope this does happen because he's looked horrible despite his k/BB ratio.

If he's open to the bullpen, the K/BB ratio might do him and a team some good. However, I seem to recall Smoltz saying he'd never pitch in relief again...

power pitchers who lose velocity tend to suck. dave duncan is good at turning junkballers into sinker experts with good control, but i can't see smoltz changing what type of player he is after 20+ years.

The limited sample size of strike outs did indeed mean he was throwing strikes, but in general they were very hittable strikes. He's essentially looked like a feast or famine guy with those pitches.
