Without Ramirez (uncertain period of time), do you really see this team getting out of its funk against the Phillies?

Offensively, sure, just because you've got the Wrigley factor in play. I think the biggest hurdle against the Phillies is going to be the Cubs' pitching and not the offense.

The schedule's not going to get any easier. The Phillies....the Dodgers are on the horizon next week. They have a 10 game stretch of playing St. Louis, Milwaukee and San Francisco on the road in September. ](*,)

Well, the fact of the matter is, if we can't win those games, we are not good enough to be a playoff team. It would make me feel better knowing that it wasn't because we blew a lot of winnable games, or that the schedules were unfair. Basically, the Cubs just came off an easy stretch where we won a ton of games and the Cardinals had a harder stretch where they played all good teams. In that stretch the Cubs gained around 3 games and took a slight lead in the division. Now the schedules have reversed and the Cubs are playing the tough teams while the Cardnials are playing cupcakes. Now theyve gotten those 3 games right back. It's the ups and downs of the season.

The crappy part is, its hard to not get too excited when we have a run and took first place, and not to get down when we lose 3 games in 4 days.

The good news: It's 4 games. We ran into a hot team playing on the road at a park where they play very very well.

The bad news: The Cardinals won all 4 of their games while we went 1-3. We now play the Phillies and if we don't snap out of this, we're in trouble because the Reds aren't going to help us, they suck. Now is time to see what this team is made of. In the previous 2 years when their backs are to the wall, they fall flat on their faces or run and hide (Florida series in '07, playoffs in '07, '08). Sure its possible for the Cubs to recover even if we don't play well, but the odds will significantly decline if we lose 2 of 3 or get swept by Philly. So while these aren't must wins, they are as close to that as you can get in August.

Without Ramirez (uncertain period of time), do you really see this team getting out of its funk against the Phillies?

It could happen. We play a lot better at home, and if you haven't noticed, the Phillies have been slumping lately. They have won only 3 of their last 11 games and are coming off getting swept by Florida, and before that lost 3/4 to San Francisco.

Yeah, the Phillies are going to be tough no matter what but this upcoming series is definitely up for grabs given the Phillies' struggles lately and since it's at home.

Plus, we don't face Lee or Hamels in the series. We get a rusty Pedro who I don't think we'll have a problem with (although Moyer would be better), Happ and Blanton. I'm starting to get on the "We're going to take 2/3 from Philly" Bandwgn

Ahh...ESPN has Blanton. OK, well we hit well against Lee in June.

Hopefully we hit Lee as well at Brett Myers hits his wife.
