If it's been posted, I apologize, but I just caught up on BA's chat, which had some Cubs tidbits.

http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/chat/2009/268626.html

Ray (Ohio): The Cubs just advanced former Kent State RHP Chris Carpenter to AA, his 3rd stop up the ladder in 2009. If Carpenter keeps getting guys out, any chance of a September call to Chicago?

J.J. Cooper: I'd say that's still a longshot, but Carpenter has done as much as anyone in the Cubs organization to raise his stock (although Jake Fox may make an argument). Carpenter's a very interesting prospect. But he's also a second-year pro who threw 33 pro innings last year with a history of injuries in the past. Asking him to throw high leverage innings in September after he's already thrown 130+ minor league innings may be asking a little much.

2 cents: Yeah ... I'm not looking for Chris Carpenter in the bigs in September. No way, no how. I'd rather shut him down than call him up. Better keep that arm healthy.

Craig (Brooklyn, NY): Better Cub Shortstop prospect: Starlin Castro or Hak-Ju Lee?

J.J. Cooper: I'll go with Castro. I'm getting very good reports on him while working on Florida State League Best Tools.

2 cents: This one is a bit fascinating, but lacking in depth right now. A lot of people seem to be picking Lee over Castro these days. KG had a blurb awhile back about Castro moving to 2nd, although I think that was based primarily on the error totals. I'll be curious when the FSL Best Tools comes out to see if he adds anything more in depth. Certainly a good problem to have.

Patton with his best rehab outing with Tennessee: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K. I hope they can stash him away as a starter at AA till September 1 and then get him some starting innings at Iowa next year.

Also no Vitters yet again.

Another nice day for Tyler Colvin: 3-for-3 with a double and a HR. Yesterday, he was 5-for-5.

Austin Bibens-Dirkx (W, 3-1), 8.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 5 SO, 1 BB, 2 pickoffs, 2.36 ERA.

Iowa won 14-0. They only gave up 1 hit. Russell, Berg, B.J. Ryan, Gaub, and Parker were the pitchers.

Holy crap, Chris Huseby walked 2 guys today!

one was intentional.

Heh - the way he's thrown strikes this season, I didn't know he could intentionally walk anyone.

Another great play by Hak-Ju at short - slow dribbler hit to the edge of the infield dirt, Lee ran in, barehanded the ball and threw him out.

Berg, Gaub, and Parker all seem pretty major league ready judging by their stats. Im assuming we see them in September along with Ryan. Maybe not Parker since hes not on the 40 man.

Gaub isn't either.

Shouldn't be a problem now:

David Patton's rehabilitation with Tennessee took a serious turn for the worst during the Smokies' 4-1 victory over the Carolina Mudcats on Saturday night.

The Chicago Cubs relief pitcher made his third Southern League start for Tennessee at Smokies Park in front of 6,328, including Chicago general manager Jim Hendry, and re-injured his right groin while warming up for the fourth inning.

"I've been working hard trying to get back to where I was and during that second warm-up pitch I pulled it right back to where it was," Patton said.

Patton was effective. The 25-year-old Seattle native threw 28 of his 44 pitches for strikes and limited Carolina to two hits and an unearned run over three innings with four strikeouts.

He seemed on the road to recovery until he grimaced and grabbed his leg. Tennessee trainer Nick Frangella headed for the mound with manager Ryne Sandberg not far behind.

"I told them it's just like it was in the past," a dejected Patton said. "I re-aggravated it. It's a setback and I'm disappointed. Hopefully I can get this rolling the right way."

Patton isn't certain what's next for him.

"I'm not sure about that," he said. "I'll probably get some information as the night progresses and figure out where we're at. Whatever the organization decides to do, that's pretty much it. I'm under their wing."

Patton was 3-1 with a 5.63 earned-run average in 17 appearances with the Cubs this season until the 6-foot-3 right-hander was injured during a game against Milwaukee. Patton was placed on the disabled list July 7 and began a rehab stint with the Smokies on July 22.

Soto struck out swinging the first time up.

Must not have lost any weight, guess he can just stay there till he does....

Eh, he was fairly pudgy in summer of last year. I don't think the weight is that much of an issue.

Woooosh O_O I think you owe me a beer at the upcoming Chiefs game for that one :D

I can never keep straight who's said what about Soto! Regardless, there shall be shenanigans afoot at that Chiefs game.
