Cubs infielder Bobby Scales has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa in anticipation of activating starting pitcher Rich Harden off the disabled list for his start on Saturday, ESPNChicago.com's Bruce Levine reported on Friday.

A little surprising considering we now have 13 pitchers on the team.

It's probably only for a day or two until Freel is ready. With Harden on a strict pitch count tomorrow and Wells going short today, they want to have enough arms for tomorrow.

Of course as soon as I say that the other corresponding roster move will be done before tomorrow's game, but we'll see.

I'm a little sad that it was Scales. For what we're planning to use the 2nd backup MI for over the next couple weeks, he would have fit better than Blanco on the team.

Agreed Scales has done surprisingly well coming off the bench.

Seriously, I think the only bench bat we have of any real threat now is Hoffpauir against righties and Reed Johnson against lefties (and Lou won't ever put him in ahead of Kosuke in the middle of the game for some insane reason).

I guess to say Scales is a 'real threat' is more an indictment of the bench than anything, though.

This will not go well.

I'm not sure this game will start on time. We had rain last night and it's raining quite hard now. The radar looks like it should rain right up to game time (maybe longer). Wet field - fragile starting pitcher - bad combo for our struggling Cubs.
