What date are we going to set for our minor league draft, and what will determine the draft order? To make it fair, should we think about some random generator and have a snaking order?

Thanks

because if tim or don somehow end up with strasburg i [expletive] quit this league.

I won't pick first regardless of how we do it, nor will Tim.

i think the fairest way is to do it by reverse records like every other draft we've had.

Reverse records of last season, or as of right now??? Im fine with whatever everyone agrees to, was just wondering how it would work.

Somewhere along the lines, I still believe you can't make it THAT enticing to dump all of your games all year so that you get first pick in the draft AND top pick in two different minor league drafts held each year.

I'd probably be fine with last place finishing teams getting the first pick in the next draft and then first pick in one of the two yearly rookie drafts we plan on doing, but not both. And I'd be fine letting the last place teams have the first pick with the June draft, but they probably shouldn't have had first pick for rookie players during the draft a few months ago, also.

My team sucks this year, but I'm still trying to be competitive the rest of the way. I could easily just try to dump the rest of the way so that I can get top draft picks 3 different times, but that just doesn't seem right to me that I should get all that for being the best dumper.

My proposal would be:

Last place teams would get first pick in the draft and the rookie draft right after the June amateur draft. The other rookie draft would either be reverse order of the other two drafts or maybe you start somewhere in the middle of the pack.

i think it's only fair that teams at the bottom get the first picks. yeah, the same team may be picking toward the top in the 2009 minor league draft and the 2010 big league draft, but the guy they get in the minor league draft isn't likely to help their team any time soon. it's not like they're going to be getting two arod's or something.

maybe you have to an nba-style lottery or something to stop people from tanking to get strasburg, but if they're picking first in the '09 minor league draft, the '10 regular draft and the '10 minor league draft, they suck anyway, so who cares if they get to keep drafting first.

whoever has the worst record/least points/whatever at the time of the draft should be picking first.

If it's not fair that I draft first 3 times in a row, we could do it according to the current record/point total at the end of this week.

yeah, the standings at the time of the minor league draft will probably be different than the standings at the end of the year (on which we base the draft order for the '10 draft).

Okay, everyone. Isn't it worth letting me have Strasburg just for this?

heh heh.

I do still have questions about the minors.

Can these minor league picks be traded?

Are we really not allowed to add minor leaguers to our roster other than through the biannual draft?

I would think you would be able to add any minor league player that isn't someone who is newly added to the database. In other words, as long as they aren't someone that was added after the draft, they should be free agents. Is that the case?

I really think we should try and limit ourselves to one minor league draft a year with the order the reverse of the standings. After the draft, players will be available as free agents. Just a reminder that the draft won't occur until after the signing deadline.

I am concerned with people giving up - especially in may and june. We did decide last year to go with the July 31 (week ending after) standings for the major league draft. I will give some thought to the minor league draft.

I think 2 minor league drafts sounds better, and mainly because over a lengthy period of time, people may not realize that certain minor leaguers were added to the database after the previous draft.

Keep the one on the back end of our major league draft and do another one sometime in July or August. After that, any non drafted minor leaguer that isn't newly added since the draft is eligible as a free agent.

This might sound somewhat weird, but what if you went reverse order on all 3 drafts, with this type of draft order:

Reverse order of standings picks major league portion of draft.

Reverse order of standings picks minor league portion of the major league draft, but 2nd to last place finisher switches places with last place on their picks.

Reverse order of standings picks minor league portion in July or August, 3rd to last swaps spots with last place finisher.

Does that reduce the incentive to finish last? Now the 3 worst teams in the league each get a first round pick.

Just thinking out loud. Maybe we really don't need the extra draft if minor leaguers already in the system become free agents. Then it really doesn't matter and maybe we don't have to make the draft as confusing as I've made it above.

I'm pretty thin on upper management, and some of these kids look like they have the tools to succeed!

Like this Brett Jackson guy.

Assuming we do a minor league draft this summer (it would suck to not do it at this point for 2009), we should definitely do it after the July signing period for international kids.
