back to adventurous archer: 2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER (somehow), 3 BB, 4 K.

somehow because Brenly threw out a runner stealing...and Beloit has left four in scoring position...57 pitches through 2 innings. likely done with Cabrera getting ready in the pen.

Salt Lake just sac bunted in the first inning with the 2nd batter of the game after the leadoff hitter got on with a single. A [expletive] sac bunt in the 1st inning. That manager should be fired on the spot.

in salt lake city, it's more than 4000 feet above sea level. not exactly a pitcher's paradise.

Not a good start so far for Reinhard. He gave up 4 runs in the first inning on two 2-run homers.

His ERA has ballooned to 1.93

3-4 with a homer and 2 singles for vitters. he's probably top 5 in batting average in the MWL.

iowa is down 12-0 and doesn't have a hit. not good.

daytona lost 6-3. starlin castro went 4-4 with 2 doubles and didn't make any errors. :)

Ryne Sandberg bunted with the 3 hitter last week. In the first inning. After the first two guys got on base.

Castro and Vitters!

Vitters line in May - .389/.411/.593. His Peoria numbers on the year are very much like his numbers last year at Boise. If he keeps this up, he should see Daytona in the second half.

Castro's already at Daytona. His numbers in May are .417/.429/.667 with 5 steals against 1 caught stealing.

Both of these guys are just 19. This is fun.

if vitters keeps this up i think we'll be able to say that he's going to be a solid hitter for average. the questions will be

1. will he hit for enough average to make for a good OBP? or will he start working the count more and drawing more walks?

2. will he hit for more power down the road? I think he has the build to hit for power, but his approach - see ball, swing at ball, put ball in play - doesn't really lend itself to hitting for power. you probably hit for more power with a khalil greene-like approach - swinging and missing or fouling more balls off. of course, that also means your average sucks and your obp is lousy.

i'm hoping that as he grows as a hitter he starts to draw more walks and is more of a traditional power hitter, rather than a high average, low walk rate curiosity.

Kevin Kreier of Peoria's DL, Josh Whitlock demoted to extended spring training to clear space on the Peoria roster.

His 1st single was a cue shot that hit the 1B bag, his next two hits were smoked both the HR and the single that nearly killed the 3B.

He has an amazing swing, it's so short and compact and the best thing about him is that he can drive the ball as well as he does and he still has plenty of room to get stronger. Vitters did swing and miss too much on 87 MPH FBs for my liking.

I liked the actions of Junior Lake at SS, he showed a + arm, and drove the ball for a nice DB despite having a long swing.

Flaherty had a rough night and didn't have a great BP session, it look like he might develop into a .270-.28o hitter with 10-15 HRs if everything goes right.

I was disappointed with Burke, I don't know if he has some sort of injury but he wasn't athletic at all, espec. for being such a high draft pick a few years ago.

Rundle has a chance, showed a strong arm, and gap to gap power in BP, though he has a long ways to get there from now but there were flashes that he has a chance to reach the majors.

Perez put on the best show in BP and IF/OF, he showed off his raw power and his 60 OF arm.

Velos for pitchers:

Archer:

FB:89-93 (sat around 91), plus life.

CB:77-81 prob. projects as avg., but only threw one or two of those that were solid.

Cut: 85-86 supposed to be a slider, acts as a cutter.

He was flying open most of the night and missing up and in to RH'ers, he wasn't missing by much, it was unfort. for him that blue didn't have the strike zone with Archer as he did the final 2 innings.

Cabrera:

FB:90-93 (sat 92)

CH or split:84-86

Sl:80-82

He threw 90% FBs and has the baffled the 1st time thru, deceptive arm action, tailing FB. Not much as far as off-speed and the second time thru, the hitters geared up for the FB.

Buchter:

86-89FB

76-78SL

2 innings, hitters didn't really square him up and located well, didn't have to use the slider much, but it showed better in warm-ups.

Bob Brenly was there with his wife and for the most part the fans left him alone.

Nate, I'm glad you figured out how to shut that Press Box door cause I couldn't.

Julio Castillo is still in the organization and throwing:

While the Cubs and Giants were battling each other on Field #3, RHPs Carlos Rojas and Julio Castillo faced-off in a two-inning simulated game on Field #2, facing Jose Valdez, Sean Williams, Jesus Morelli, and Jericho Jones,

Castillo (AKA "Animal") is from the back jungles of the Dominican Republic (near the border with Haiti), and he is a legend among Cubs minor leaguers as the guy who captured a wild desert rat at the Padres minor league facility in Peoria, Arizona, a couple of years ago, and then kept the rodent as a pet for the summer while he pitched for the AZL Cubs.

Presently on the Restricted List while awaiting final disposition of criminal charges filed against him in Ohio as the result of throwing a baseball at a fan during a brawl in Dayton last August while a member of the Peoria Chiefs. Castillo is one of the hardest throwers in the Cubs system (with a fastball that routinely clocks at 95+), so the Cubs are not necessarily in a hurry to discharge Animal from the organization. He has the type of power stuff (fastball & slider) that could make him a potential big-time set-up man or closer someday (that is, as long as he isn't otherwise occupied serving a lengthy term--and throwing the 9th inning--at the Ohio State Penitentiary).

Looking at the box score, Logan Watkins and Matt Cerda had good games at the plate (though Cerda had a passed ball). Nice pitching from Su-Min Jung.

Ha! No problem, the wind was gonna keep it banging all night. Sorry I had to get on the air or I would have chatted longer. If you are back at all this week come up and say hi.

Beloit don't have a stadium gun, which is prob. a good thing if it's anything like some of the minor league parks around.
